Byron Korus, EdD student, has been awarded the 2006 MCCA Doctoral Dissertation Fellowship from the Minnesota Career College Association. The award was established to promote and encourage research for the advancement of student learning and to search for advanced pedagogy for instructors to create a better learning environment.

A full time EdD student, Korus teaches at the Art Institute International as a culinary instructor, and owns the catering companies of Special Events Catering and Chuckwagon Catering.

The Fellowship includes a cash award of $5000 designated to tuition and other expenses of the dissertation process.

For his dissertation, Korus is exploring the question, “How successful is student learning using team-based learning (TBL) as a transformative pedagogy in the development of a post-secondary culinary classroom culture?”

Korus anticipates completing the EdD program in May of 2007 and says of his future plans: “As a life long learner I plan to continue with my personal education, and to make a difference in the pedagogy of culinary schools in the U.S. through networking, as a presenter at culinary teacher conferences, and through The American Culinary Federation Educational Institute.”

You can learn more about Byron Korus’s dissertation and his work in the culinary arts from his website at http://www.mncatering.com.
