Water use in other countries
Activities for classroom or home

Have you heard of . . .

Hauling icebergs or large containers of water across the ocean to supply fresh water to dry areas?

Seeding clouds to make them rain?

Do some research on creative ways people have figured out to get the fresh water they need when water is scarce.

Write a short story or poem

Find books or stories about people living in countries where water is scarce.

What if you didn't have enough clean, fresh water to wash or cook with, or even drink? How would life be different? What would you give up first? Write a short story or essay about it.

AVERAGE gallons used

Using the following number of gallons used per person each day, what would the the AVERAGE gallons used?

Average gallons used = __________

Then figure out how many gallons each country is over or under that amount.
Print this page and enter the amounts, with a "+" or "-" in the blank column).

Country
Gallons used
(per person per day)

Amount over or
under the average

United States 192 gallons
Japan 96 gallons
France 64 gallons
China 48 gallons

PERCENTAGES of water used in the U.S.

One person in Japan uses ____ % of the gallons used by 1 person in the U.S.

One person in France uses ____ % of the gallons used by 1 person in the U.S.

One person in China uses ____ % of the gallons used by 1 person in the U.S.

Ecological Footprint

Research this concept on the internet or at the library. If you apply the concept to water use, how much water would be a more sustainable level of water use in the U.S.?

Hint: Generally, 1/5th of the resources we now use in the U.S. is considered to be a more sustainable level.
