• MALS Admission Requirements 

    Hamline University will waive the $30 application fee if you apply online!

    To apply online, you will need to create a Login ID of up to nine alphanumeric characters and a six-digit PIN number. Please remember your ID and PIN; this will allow you to begin the application form, and save it and finish at a later time.

    We suggest you that you put your writing sample and responses to the essay questions in Word format and email them to gradprog@hamline.edu.

    You may also cut and paste the text into the application form if necessary. (Please review the questions below before starting your application process.)

    Essay questions

    Respond to each of the following questions in a three-to-four page, double-spaced essay:

    1: How and why have you decided to pursue graduate study in an interdisciplinary program? How can the MALS/CALS program further your personal and/or professional aims? What special abilities, personal qualities, and life experiences do you bring to the MALS/CALS program, including and independent study projects, writing, or research in which you have been engaged, and titles of any published works?

    2: What book, thinker, artist, or writer (choose one) has had significant influence on you? Please include reference to key stylistic or content elements which you believe to be of special importance.

    You may also choose to send your essays directly to the address below. If you do so, please note that in the appropriate section of the online application.

    What must be submitted separately:

    • Official transcripts from your regionally accredited undergraduate degree-granting institution. Transcripts should be sent directly from the institution to the Office of Graduate Admission (address below).
    • Two letters of recommendation. Request these letters from two people familiar with your academic and/or professional qualifications. Letters of recommendation should be sent to the Office of Graduate Admission (address below).
    • Any supplemental materials you wish the admission committee to consider. Supplemental materials should be sent to the Office of Graduate Admission (address below).
