To Caroline, in the Protestant Cemetery, Florence      

Time has worn away all but the name      
of Caroline      
from the stone that marks your resting place.     
You will remain forever ageless     
timeless     
simply a woman loved enough     

for someone to erect a small angel in her honor.    

I hope you lie among friends here in the soft clear air    
amidst the shadows of history. I would like to know    
what in this city held you here, what works of art    
brought you back again and again    
to stand before them in awe    
each time to find a new hint of color    
a subtle shading    
a new connection to yourself    
what soft music from the river   
or bustle from the streets   
made this your home.
