Midway Journal Internship

About Midway:

Midway Journal was founded in 2006 by four Hamline University MFA graduates. In less than 2 years, Midway has established a wide reading base, and a reputation for publishing both new and established authors. The following is from our “about us” page on our website:

“Just off of I-94 and on the border between St. Paul and Minneapolis, the Midway, like any other state fairgrounds, is alive with a mix of energies and people. Its position as mid-way, as a place of boundary crossing, also reflects our vision for this journal. The work here complicates and questions the boundaries of genre, binary, and aesthetic. It offers surprises and ways of re-seeing, re-thinking, and re-feeling: a veritable banquet of literary fare. Which is why, in each new issue, we are honored to present work by both new and established writers alike.

We are looking to act not only as a bridge between aesthetics (and maybe even coasts) but we are looking to create a sense of place as well. And like any good fair, place is a relative term as the contents and attractions change frequently. So, if you’ve come here seeking the traditional quarterly magazine, well, you’ve come to the wrong place.

Unlike other journals, we will upload a new issue every other month, or six issues annually. Each new publishing year begins with the October/November issue. Issues run from the fifteenth to the fifteenth and not from the first to the first. The journal will therefore maintain frequent updates, which we feel will best represent the range of voices and styles housed here, inviting readers back to visit with regularly updated texts.”

For more information about Midway, see our website:  www.midwayjournal.com

Midway’s current needs:

While Midway has been successful in gaining readers and positive attention during its short existence, we have struggled to develop a funding base and a stronger set of mechanisms to reach out to potential new readers. Most of the editorial board’s time is taken up with reading submissions, writer correspondence, and selecting the work for each volume. It is our desire in the future to have a self-sustaining journal that draws in at least enough financial support to make costs, and which has an expanded readership, including into areas we have not tapped into. We also have considered doing print versions sometime in the future, if income levels are increased to cover those costs.

Duties/Roles of an Intern (2 credits)

1. General

 a. To serve as a lead on issues concerning advertising, journal promotion, and donor cultivation

2. Specific

 a. To continue and expand on Midway’s Journal’s efforts to solicit advertising from other literary establishments, colleges, bookstores, etc. This includes not only locating potential donors and securing advertisements, but also developing a mechanism to maintain connections with clients that may be used by future interns, or by the Midway editorial board.

 b. To research and develop additional mechanisms to fund Midway Journal, either through short term efforts, such as benefit readings, or long term efforts such as continual donors.

 c. To develop a plan to promote Midway Journal, both locally in the Twin Cities, and on the web (through our website and facebook pages).

 d. To work with the Midway board to determine further methods that can help the journal achieve a more sustainable future.

3. Desired Skills/Interests

 a. an interest in writing that challenges traditional forms, boundaries, and aesthetics.

 b. creativity concerning fundraising and promotion.

 c. self-starting energy and motivation to develop plans and execute them when applicable.

 d. an ability to work both within a team setting, and on your own with little or no supervision.

 e. a desire to intern with a small literary organization looking to expand its reach.

If interested, please contact Nathan Thompson at ngthmpsn@aol.com or our journal e-mail address editors@midwayjournal.com

Patrick's Cabaret

Patrick's Cabaret is an informal performance venue in Minneapolis, MN. Twice a month the Cabaret presents six eclectic and talented artists from the Twin Cities. Each show is filled with music, dance and stories. The purpose of Patrick's Cabaret is to support artists in their growth and development by providing an informal, supportive environment in which performers can present their work. The Cabaret specifically reaches out to gay, lesbian, bisexual and transgender artists, and artists of color.

The Cabaret would welcome interns with an expertise and/or interest in the curation of twice monthly shows, administrative experience with building administration (the Cabaret rents out the space to local organizations), database and website knowledge, marketing and publicity, board development and recruitment, and office management systems. An intern may create his or her own internship as well.
