What got you interested in pursuing liberal studies at the graduate level?
I had been out of school about five years when I first looked into the MALS program at Hamline. I was successfully employed in a job that I liked well enough, but I felt drawn to exploring further education that opened my mind intellectually, creatively, and spiritually. I felt like I had missed something in my undergraduate experience. Maybe it was personal connections with other students and professors that were missing at a large public university. Or the place I was in my life. Or the choices I made—not necessarily the ones closest to my heart. Or all of the above. I wasn’t sure, but I knew I wanted more. And not a career-ladder experience, but a personal one. One just for me.
What was your MALS experience like?
It felt somewhat indulgent to pursue an advanced degree that didn’t necessarily offer a clear boost to my career. But it was a healthy and satisfying indulgence. I meandered my way through the first several semesters, taking whatever appealed to me. At my mid-program evaluation, it became clear that arts and literature were my love. (I’d known that since I was five, but I’d never allowed myself to indulge it as an adult.) I started to write more, read fiction for the first time in years, and take courses that allowed me—and challenged me—to read, write, photograph, ponder, discuss, and struggle with new ideas and new ways of looking at old ideas. The MALS professors were incredible. The students were varied and interesting. I was humbled by the intelligence and creativity in my fellow students and professors, but I learned that what I had to offer was also valuable, even occasionally brilliant!
How has the MALS degree impacted your life?
Since graduating from Hamline, my life has continued to evolve in the same way it did while I was a student. I finally left that job I liked “well enough” in favor of work in a field that makes my heart sing (Friends of the Mississippi River and the Minnesota Environmental Partnership). And I made other changes in my personal life that I would never have imagined I was capable of making. For the first time in my life, I feel like my values are truly connected to my life’s work.
