  • The Creative Writing Programs

Excellent and engaged teaching of creative writing, the cultivation of writers, and the making of literature are hallmarks of The Creative Writing Programs at Hamline. The MFA in creative writing, established in 1994, was the first MFA in creative writing degree in Minnesota. A few years later, in 1998, Water~Stone Review was founded. Since then, Hamline has developed two more programs in creative writing—a low-residency MFA in Writing for Children and Young Adults and an undergraduate major/BFA in creative writing—making Hamline the only university in the United States with three fine arts degrees in creative writing and a national, award-winning literary magazine.

MFA students are able to take elective interdisciplinary courses in the Master of Arts in Liberal Studies program, one of the first graduate programs at Hamline. MFA students interested in writing for children and young adults also have the option of taking twelve credits (one residency and one semester) in the low-residency MFA in Writing for Children and Young Adults program.

    Our Undergraduate Programs

The creative writing major leads to a bachelor’s of fine art (BFA) degree and prepares students for numerous post-graduate careers. Students will be able to maximize their talents as creative writers; pursue graduate study in creative writing, literature, or any number of select fields (e.g., education, law, business); or seek employment in publishing, professional writing, and other related fields.
