Hamline University, already a leader in study abroad opportunities
among Minnesota’s private colleges, was selected to join the Institute of International Education (IIE)’s
Generation Study Abroad initiative to help increase the national number of students who study abroad. Hamline has pledged to increase the percentage of its undergraduates who study internationally to 70% by 2020. This will contribute to IIE’s national goal to double the number of American students who study abroad by the end of the decade.
“Hamline University has long been committed to robust, international academic experiences for our undergraduate and graduate students,” Hamline University President Linda N. Hanson said. “Joining the Generation Study Abroad Initiative further demonstrates our interest in and focus on creating competent, passionate global citizens who are ready to engage in learning and understanding wherever their education and vocation may lead them.”
More than 150 higher education institutions from 41 U.S. states have already signed the Generation Study Abroad commitment, including large state and private universities, liberal arts colleges, community colleges, historically black colleges and universities, and other minority serving institutions. In Minnesota, Hamline, the University of Minnesota, Twin Cities, and St. Cloud State University were selected to join the initiative.
“The Generation Study Abroad initiative strongly aligns with Hamline’s value of creating competent, passionate global citizens, and we are very pleased to be chosen as a participant,” Kari Richtsmeier, director of Hamline’s International and Off-Campus Programs, said. “Hamline is consistently recognized as a leader in study abroad opportunities through IIE’s annual Open Doors report, and we are excited to develop new, innovative ways to offer even more students these high-impact learning experiences."
The U.S. Department of State’s Bureau of Educational and Cultural Affairs and several foreign governments, as well as key higher education associations and study abroad provider organizations, have also pledged to support the goals of the initiative. Recognizing the importance of an internationally focused workforce, IIE is also actively seeking the participation of corporations and the business community. Building on its nearly 100-year commitment to study abroad, IIE has committed $2 million of its own funds to this initiative over the next 5 years.
