Lunchtime Conversations on Vocation
Each year since 2001, the Wesley Center has sponsored a series of lunchtime gatherings, providing an opportunity to meet other members of the Hamline community in conversation and to hear about vocational journeys and life stories.  During Spring 2008, we have several opportunities to meet old friends and new staff, as well as hear from two student groups.  Please join us on the following Tuesdays and Thursdays.  Give your name to the Sorin Dining Hall cashier for a free lunch.  Beverages and dessert are available in Sorin B (on April 24, refreshements will be available in Law Grad 106).  No reservations needed, except for Founders Day Luncheon.  There are 4 more gatherings in the month on April.

Chinese lecture Part III, Han Dynasty and the Silk Road
In this lecture, Dr. Yali You will discuss the reason why the majority of Chinese people are known as Han People, Chinese characters are known as Han characters, Chinese language is known as Han language; the characteristic style of Han stone sculptures, pottery, jade, and other art works; the Origin and impact of the Silk Road, the meaning of the capital city, Chang An- today's Xian), and City of Xian (the capital of 13 dynasties in Chinese history); the first official Chinese history records and its authors; paper making- one of the four great inventions of ancient China; the connection between the Han Dynasty and the Ancient Roman Empire, and much more!

"Sustainable Hamline, Sustainable St. Paul"
Part of the Hamline Dialogue Series "Managing Our Resources: Energy, the Environment and Sustainability".  The world and all of its systems run on some sort of energy; energy moves the world.  Demand for energy is growing.  The ability to meet increasing demands while preserving the environment and managing sustainability are challenges that every system must face.  Over the course of seven Dialogues, the Graduate School of Management and Education will bring together experts to address these issues and engage the audience in a dialogue sure to energize and sustain discussion.

"Walking We Ask Questions: A Reflection on Mentoring and Diversity at Hamline University"
Public presentation on mentoring and diversity by Gordon Nakagawa, Director of Diversity Integration; Addresses questions such as: Who was Mentor, and what does s/he have to do with diversity? Why is mentoring more like speed dating than match making? Can tormentors be mentors too? What do the Zapatistas have to do with mentoring? How many mentors does it take to change a light bulb?

Law and Leadership series Welcomes Former Minnesota Associate Justice Sam Hanson
Justice Hanson will speak on "Guardians of the Common Law: The Fine Line Between Judicial Responsibility and Judicial Activism."  He will review decisions that implicate separation of power concerns in the expansion of contraction of the common law.

Race, Genetics, Indian Identity & the Law: What Role Should Race & Genetics Play in Defining Indianness?
This symposium will explore a controversial and contested area of Indian law: the roles that race and genetics play in defining who is an Indian.  The panel will consist of academics, practitioners, and legal scholars addressing various dimensions of this conflict including race, genetics, bioethics, tribal membership, and cultural identity.  The presentation will culminate in a case study of Lucy Allen v. Cherokee Nation (Freedman disenrollment case).  Two Minnesota CLE Credits have been requested.

Journaling Circle
All Hamline students are invited to join the Journaling Circle.  The Journaling Circle is a weekly group that meets to take time for journaling and self-reflection.  Each session will be facilitated by Carolyn Holbrook and will include writing prompts, tools and techniques for keeping a journal.  Come for one, come for all.  Just bring yourself, a pen, and some paper.
