General Program Questions:
How long do I have to complete the MAEd?
You have seven years to complete the MAEd program. If you are unable to complete the degree in seven years, you must submit a program extension request to the Advanced Degrees and Administrative Licensure Department Chair, Carol Mayer.
How long does it typically take to complete the MAEd?
Most average students take two years to complete the required coursework and an additional one to three semesters to complete the capstone requirement. The length of time needed to complete the degree varies due to factors including but not limited to work and family commitments, number of transferred elective courses, capstone research topic and scope, and summer availability.
How do I know which classes to register for and when they are offered?
The course sequence for all MAEd learning communities can be found on the MAEd Course Sequence sheet. On-campus students do not have a required course sequence, but should take the capstone courses after the completion of all other course requirements.
A list of courses, when they are offered, and additional descriptions can be found at in the Hamline Course Schedule or in Piperline.
How do I fulfill the elective requirement?
The required ten elective credits can be fulfilled through 6000-, 7000-, or 8000-level School of Education courses; through 8000-level courses at other Hamline graduate programs; or at other accredited institutions. A Hamline certificate or licensure program may also be used to fulfill all or most of the elective requirement.
At least five of the elective credits must be completed through Hamline University. For more information about credit transfer requirements, review the Graduate School Bulletin.
Where can I find course descriptions?
More detailed course descriptions for core courses can be found in your MAEd Student Handbook. Shorter descriptions for all courses are also located in Piperline.
Where can I find faculty and staff contact information?
Faculty and staff contact information can be accessed through Hamline’s online Directory.
I’m not sure if I have a faculty advisor or who my advisor is. How can I find out?
All MAEd students are given a faculty advisor after they meet the advance to candidacy requirements. If you are unsure of who your faculty advisor is, contact Mary Speranza-Reeder at msperanzareeder01@hamline.edu for clarification.
Capstone Questions:
For how long is my capstone registration active?
Your registration for GED 8495: Capstone is active for two years. If the capstone is not completed within two years of the term of registration, the grade becomes withdraw (W) and you will be required to register again, paying the current full tuition rate.
Where can I find an outline of all steps needed to fulfill the capstone requirement? General information about the capstone requirement can be found in your MAEd Student Handbook. More specific information, including a step-by-step completion checklist can be found in the Capstone Completion Guide.
By when do I need to submit my capstone to graduate?
Capstone submission deadlines can be found in your MAEd Student Handbook on the Degree Completion Timeline.
Do I get a copy of my bound capstone?
If you would like a bound copy of your capstone, we suggest going to a copy service such as FedEx Office (formerly Kinko’s). Unfortunately, we do not have the resources to bind individual capstones.
