Solstice River XV: Dancing for Safe Water Everywhere

    CGEE - Solstice River Photo - 200 pixelsSaturday, June 25, 2011 at 5 p.m.
Come to the beloved Stone Arch Bridge in downtown Minneapolis to watch the astonishing, site-specific dance, Solstice River, one of the Global Water Dances performances. This event will be but one of 45 performances across six continents held on June 25 around the globe. In an effort to raise awareness surrounding issue of access to clean water, participants of Global Water Dances will combine art and education in a novel way never done before.

    About the Solstice River performance

Dancers annually bring the river corridor to life by appearing on the dike, nearby grain silos and rooftops, and in kayaks. Learn about the river's environmental issues, the importance of maintaining its health and appreciating its beauty.

Amazingly enough this coming June will be the 15th annual performance of the Solstice River, which was started in 1997, on the Stone Arch Bridge – with this year’s theme focusing on global water issues and access to clean and safe drinking water. The Solstice River partners are the US Army Corps of Engineers, the St. Anthony Falls Laboratory, Mill City Museum, the Guthrie, KBEM, Twin Cities T'ai-Chi Ch'uan Studio, and Earth Spirit Environments, Inc.

Hamline University School of Education’s Center for Global Environmental Education provides public information about the care and health of the river.

One attendee of these annual performances has said, “By attending these events, I have gained an intimacy with a river that I had merely lived beside. Solstice River asks us to consider the future of these water resources and offers solutions.”

    Directions

The Stone Arch Bridge is approached from the downtown Minneapolis side at West River Road and Portland Avenue; from the east side of the river, the approach is from 6th Avenue SE and Main Street. The site is wheelchair accessible.
