BioTIC -- Biotechnology/microbiology for Teachers In the Classroom

Summer science institute for 7-12 biology teachers

Thank you for your interest! The 2009 institute is FULL. Please check back in January 2010 for information on the 2010 BioTIC institute.

Please read carefully before opening online application below

Attention 7-12 biology teachers:

The BioTIC Institute brings middle and high school biology teachers up-to-speed on the rapid advancements in biotech research, careers, applications and issues while providing inquiry modeling/practice and curriculum enrichment in three Life Science core sub-strands of the Minnesota Academic Standards in Science (2003): Cells, Heredity, and Human Organism. BioTIC provides a great complement to the MnSTEP Secondary Biology/Environmental Science Institute which focuses more on the Diversity of Organisms, Interdependence of Life, Biological Populations Change Over Time, and Flow of Energy and Matter.

The BioTIC Institute will:

  • be held August 3-7 & 10-14, 2009 on-campus at Hamline University in Saint Paul
  • engage 24 teachers per summer
  • provide an intensive, graduate-level, teacher-focused, summer institute related to the Cells, Heredity and Human Organism Sub-strands of the standards
  • provide follow-up sessions and classroom support during the school year

Teachers participating in the BioTIC Institute will receive:

  • training in biotechnology and microbiology
  • time to discuss, enhance, and develop ways to enrich your biology curriculum
  • light breakfast and lunch each day during the institute, and dinner (if staying overnight)
  • overnight lodging during the two-week institute, if needed (option available to participants living outside the Twin Cities Metro area)
  • four graduate semester credits
  • $200 stipend, resource materials, and
  • the chance to network with fellow biology teachers and university faculty!

To apply, click on the link below. If this is your first 2009 BioTIC or MnSTEP application, click on the "First time user account creation" link to create a Login ID and PIN. This ID and PIN will only be used during the application process. However, I encourage you to write down the ID and PIN should you decide to return to your application later or to apply to a second MnSTEP institute this summer. The application Login ID and PIN is NOT the same as (if you already have them set up) your official Hamline ID number and Piperline PIN.

The 2009 BioTIC institute is FULL - August 3-7 & 10-14, 2009
