    Why Hamline School of Education's ESL for Mainstream Teachers Certificate?

    Facing increasing numbers of English-language learners in your classroom? You aren't alone. Classrooms across the country are experiencing a surge in enrollment of English language learners. Teachers find they are often not adequately trained to meet the growing challenges of educating students who are not very fluent in English.

    Program overview

    Flexible Structure: Online and on campus offerings

    Time to Complete: 9 to 12 months

    Program Begins: Fall, Spring, and Summer terms

    Curriculum: 4 courses, 10 credits

    Cost: $275 per credit for ESL Learner course, $405 per credit for remaining 3 courses for the 2013-2014 academic year

    Admission: No application or admission required. Simply register for the introductory course to begin the certificate.


    Required Courses:
    ESL 6610: ESL Learner Mainstream Classroom (1 credit)
    ESL 7502: Language and Society (4 credits)
    ESL 7753: Test & Evaluation Eng Lang Learners (2 credits)
    ESL 7755: Development of Literacy Skills (3 credits)


    All coursework in the ESL for Mainstream Teachers Certificate except the introductory course may be applied to Hamline School of Education's K-12 ESL Additional Licensure, Master of Arts in English as a Second Language, or Master of Arts in Education programs.
