Graduate Continuing Studies
Classrooms across the country are experiencing a surge of enrollment of English language learners. Teachers find they are often not adequately trained to meet the growing challenges of educating students who are not yet very fluent in English. SLTL has designed a certificate to meet the needs of non-ESL teachers who have English language learners in their classes.
Our coursework will help you make pedagogical decisions about the education of your English language learners that will build confidence and skills in the classroom.
The certificate consists of four courses for a total of 10 semester credits.
Required Courses:ESL 6610: ESL Learner Mainstream ClassroomESL 7502: Language and SocietyESL 7753: Test & Evaluation Eng Lang LearnersESL 7755: Development of Literacy Skills
Certificate coursework addresses integrating students into the classroom, second language acquisition, developing literacy skills, testing, evaluation, and the impact of language on society.
All coursework except ESL 6610 can be applied towards licensure in ESL, but the certificate does not include all the coursework necessary for a license.
If you believe you have completed all of the requirements of the ESL for Mainstream Teachers certificate, please request your printed certificate. Your transcript will be evaluated and your accounts checked for holds. We cannot issue certificates to people with financial holds on their accounts. Certificates are processed monthly and you can expect to receive it within four to six weeks after your request. Congratulations on your hard work!
