Education Minor

Hamline University has been serving the needs of new teachers since the 1850s. As we progress through our 150th year and beyond, this legacy continues as we work to prepare teachers who can meet the demands of teaching.

The School of Education's goal is to help students develop a reflective teaching practice in urban, multicultural contexts. With these skills, future teachers can:

     1. Promote equity in schools and society
     2. Build communities of teachers and learners
     3. Construct knowledge
     4. Practice thoughtful inquiry and reflection

Hamline believes that teachers educated in this context are better prepared to teach in a variety of settings. In this way, the education program serves as a bridge to teaching in urban, rural, suburban, and international educational environments. Students gain experience placed in several different urban school settings where they develop the knowledge, skills, and dispositions essential to effective teaching.

State of Minnesota licensure examination requirements

Praxis I: Pre-Professional Practice Skills Test (PPST)

All candidates for licensure must successfully complete the Pre-Professional Skills Test (PPST) in reading, writing, and math. All students are expected to take this exam as sophomores prior to application for admission to the teacher education program. Completion of the PPST exam is required before formal admission into the teacher education program can be granted. Taking the PPST during the sophomore year ensures the opportunity to retake all or portions of the exam before applying for a license. No student will be recommended for licensure without passing this exam

Praxis II: Principals of Learning and Teaching Test

All candidates who are applying for a first-time Minnesota Teaching license must complete the Praxis II Principals of Learning and Teaching test and Subject Assessment/Specialty Area Tests.

Information regarding the praxis testing required for initial licensure in Minnesota can be obtained from the Minnesota Department of Education. Information regarding registration procedures, fees, and exam dates can also be obtained from the School of Education or from the ETS/Praxis web page at www.ets.org/praxis.
