ATLAS is working with the Minnesota Department of Education on its three-year Transition to Post-Secondary initiative, helping facilitate training and projects to address the gap between ABE and post-secondary education.
TRANSITIONS CONFERENCE
The 2009 Transition to Post-Secondary Conference is set for October 22-23, 2009; please watch this website for more information as it becomes available. Click HERE for the 2009 Call for Proposals.
INSTRUCTIONAL PRACTICES ALIGNMENT
To begin the process of aligning ABE and post-secondary instructional practices, in early 2008 ATLAS conducted a survey of both MnSCU and ABE faculty to identify needs and current practices. A multidisciplinary working group was then assembled to analyze the survey data and prepare recommendations for aligning ABE/transitions education with higher education.
MENTORING PROGRAM
Following the curriculum alignment project, the ATLAS Advisor and Director launched a pilot mentoring program with selected sites that offer transition-level programming. They assisted teachers in the development of observation rubrics for assessing teaching and learning, specifically in transition-level adult ESL, ABE and GED classes. Class observations were conducted to identify strengths and areas for growth, followed by mentoring sessions to address these areas. The pilot was extremely successful, and the program has now been extended beyond the area of transitions.
