9:30     Introduction to Professional Development –
Kimberly Johnson, Hamline Univ.

What is ATLAS?  Where is ABE headed with professional development in Minnesota?  Find out in this informative session.

10:15   Breakout Sessions (choose one):

1) Author Your Own RealeBooks – Susan Wetenkamp-Brandt, Minnesota Literacy Council (Computer Lab)  What are Realebooks? Use free RealeWriter software to create your own printable picture e-books. Realebooks allow students and teachers to share their most relevant personalized stories: their own!

2) Reading Fluency Strategies in the ABE classroom– Heather Turngren, Minneapolis Public Schools ABE  Reading Fluency is the ability to read accurately, quickly, expressively, with good phrasing, AND with good comprehension.  Fluency is important because it provides a bridge between word recognition and comprehension.  In this workshop, the presenter will discuss Fluency and have strategies and classroom tips and ideas to help teachers make their learners more fluent readers. (Addresses the relicensure area of continued reading instruction)

11:45   Lunch
12:30   Exploring Alternative Ways of Knowing –
Kimberly Johnson, Hamline Univ.

Teachers know that students come to the adult classroom with many differences: abilities, background, personalities. But how aware are we of alternative ways of knowing for students, including differences between men and women? How might these alternative ways of knowing impact educational success in our classrooms? In this session, we’ll explore some of these alternatives, assess what we do in the adult classroom, and identify strategies to make teaching relevant for our diverse students. (Addresses the relicensure area of cultural competence)

2:00 Breakout Sessions (choose one):

1) MLC Website and Discussion Boards – Susan Wetenkamp-Brandt, Minnesota Literacy Council (Computer Lab)  “Who has time for professional development?” Is this question all too familiar? Or maybe you live in a rural area and think, “Where are the professional development opportunities?” Perhaps you feel that, “I always have another commitment on the day the really exciting workshop is happening.” Come to this session to lean about online training opportunities that increase access to professional development by allowing you to work at your own pace, regardless of location.

2) Collective Intelligence Groups – Laura Prettyman, Moderator
Looking for some time to network and connect with teachers from other programs or classrooms? Use this time to discuss your successes, as well as learn from your colleagues. Please bring two or three ideas that worked well for you in your classroom or questions you would like to discuss.
