Northeast Spring 2008 Regional In-Service

The Northeast Regional ABE Professional Development Coordinator of the Minnesota Department of Education and the ATLAS program at Hamline University are pleased to offer this ABE training opportunity.  CEUs indicating attendance will be provided.

8:45-9:15    Registration and Continental Breakfast (provided)

9:15    Welcome (Continued Learning Center Conference Room)

9:30-11:00    Challenging Behaviors in the ABE Classroom (Continued Learning Center Conference Room) – Paula Freiermuth, West Metro Professional Development Coordinator

Based on extensive experience working in the ABE classroom, Paula will share strategies for working with students whose challenging behaviors take away from the business of learning. The information in this interactive session is relevant to working with adults, and can be applied in your classroom right away!  (This session addresses the relicensure area of positive behavioral intervention strategies.)

11:00-12:30    Breakout Sessions – Choose one:

A) Getting to Know the Accuplacer (Computer Lab-Donovan Hall 115) – Ann Vidovic, Supervisor of Student Support Services, Itasca Community College

Put on your thinking cap and be ready to test your skills as Ann discusses the Accuplacer test faced by students transitioning from GED to post-secondary education.  There will be time for session participants to take the Accuplacer, an experience that will be helpful in assisting learners to prepare for this test.

B) Classrooms and Cultures (Continued Learning Center Conference Room) – Steve Briggs, Mesabi Range Community and Technical College

Do you feel challenged working in a multi-cultural classroom? Bring your questions for Steve about working with diverse learners.  Steve will discuss student perceptions of culture in the classroom, as well as Native American perceptions and experiences. (This session addresses the relicensure area of working with varied students.)

D) Study Skills for College-Bound Students (Continued Learning Center Conference Room) – Laura Prettyman, AEOA

Are you encouraging your learners to continue on to college after they have earned their GED? Unfortunately many ABE students do not have the necessary study skills to be successful in postsecondary education. Attend Laura’s session to learn some hints and strategies to help transitioning students hit the books.

2:30-3:00    Transitions to Post-Secondary (Continued Learning Center Conference Room)

Are you wondering how other ABE professionals are doing in this current state emphasis area? Several teachers from around the region will share their experience working with students transitioning to postsecondary. Hear about successes, challenges and tips for teachers working with these learners, and share about your own efforts.
