The Regional ABE Professional Development Coordinators of the Minnesota Department of Education along with the ATLAS program at Hamline University are pleased to offer the East Metro Spring Regional Inservice. CEU’s indicating attendance will be provided.

9:00-9:45 What Do We Do with Non-Progressing Students? MN Department of Education Adult Basic Education Student Progress Policy

Eligible ABE students receiving free education services must demonstrate measurable progress as determined by the state approved NRS adult-appropriate standardized assessments. The development of implementation of the new state-wide policy, required for all ABE programs, will be discussed.

9:45-11:00 Story by Story – A Contextual Phonics Model and Curriculum

Story by Story is a research and practitioner-based contextual phonics model and curriculum providing informal assessment, sequential word study, and early literacy stories (at approximately GE 0.5 – 2.5) for Beginning ABE level students. It is intended for adults who have acquired a basic level of sight/survival word knowledge, but still need direct phonics instruction and practice. Participants in this workshop will receive step-by-step training in the model, a reproducible word analysis inventory, and the aligned Level I and Level II curriculum for teacher or tutor use.

9:45-11:00 New ABE Teacher Orientation – Part 1

This session will provide an overview of Adult Basic Education in Minnesota for instructors who are new to the field or would like a review of the basics. In part 1, we’ll cover a variety of topics, including policy, funding and accountability. Participants will have the opportunity to ask their burning questions and learn about resources for further information and professional development.

11:15-12:30 The 3 C’s of Writing

In this session, participants will learn about and do various writing exercises that help learners with writing anxiety. The session will look at a teaching structure that uses the scaffolding approach of correct, complete, create.
