7051 Brooklyn Blvd, Brooklyn Center, MN 55429

Agenda
8:30-9:00 Registration, Coffee
9:00-12:00 Alphabetics: Tools, Strategies, and Resources Carol Fuller, retired Beginning ABE/ESL teacher
ABE students struggling at Beginning and Intermediate levels have difficulties with alphabetics or the “word level” of reading proficiency. They do not have mastery of the English code, syllable patterns, roots, prefixes, and suffixes. Beginning students tend to get stuck reading and spelling one-syllable words; intermediate students get stalled reading and spelling multi-syllable words. Consequently, they also experience difficulties at the “text level” with fluency and comprehension. In addition, they may not show progress on CASAS or TABE and often feel discouraged and disheartened.
This workshop will include:
• FREE informal diagnostic reading assessment tools
• Decodable and sight word strategies and resources
• Lesson planning and organizational ideas
• Volunteer tutor ideas
• Reflection and planning time
12:00 Evaluations, CEU’s
