8:45-10:30 Working with Multinational Student Survivors of Torture and/or War Trauma - Alison Beckman, Center for Victims of Torture
(This session addresses the relicensure area of key warning signs of mental illness.)
This session will cover the following topics:
- Definitions of torture and war trauma
- Psychological effects of torture and war trauma
- Creating a safe and successful classroom for refugee students
- Handling disclosure
- Secondary Trauma

10:45-12:30 Teaching the Adult Student with Limited Formal Schooling -
Kimberly Johnson, ATLAS/Hamline University
(This session addresses the relicensure area of the curriculum to meet the needs of varied students.)
The needs and abilities of students with interrupted or limited formal schooling can create challenges for all teachers. What is the nature of those challenges? How can teachers best address these issues to facilitate learning for students? In this session, we will explore some of the particular issues that can slow success for students, do some awareness-raising work about our assumptions and understanding of classroom culture, and also identify strategies for teachers to best meet the needs of adult students with limited formal schooling.

1:15-3:00 Conflict Management: The Role of the Classroom Supervisor -
Rachel Orzoff, MCF-Lino Lakes
(This session addresses the relicensure area positive behavioral intervention.)
This session looks to highlight the role that an individual can play in preventing and mediating situations of destructive conflict in the classroom and in promoting constructive responses to conflict. Five styles of conflict will be discussed and participants will review the impact of their own preferred conflict management style on their classroom.
