10:45-12:00 Concurrent Session 1 (choose one):
1. Refresh Your Curriculum Design Skills
Burgen Young, ESL Training Coordinator, The Minnesota Literacy Council, St. Paul
Curriculum design can be overwhelming. There is a lot to consider: student needs and goals, standardized tests, review, recycling, balancing modalities and skills, and much more. Come share your ideas for assessing student needs, selecting topics, writing objectives and following routines. Get inspired to start creating a user-friendly curriculum, or take your curriculum to the next level.
2. Using Memory Tools, Patterns and Other Learning Strategies to Enhance Structured Learning
Richard Cooper, PhD
Many students who have learning or attention problems manifest poor organizational skills and lack structure. This presentation will provide participants with techniques to help learners improve their reading, writing, and spelling skills.
3. Get Your Game On! Hands-on Activities and Simple Games to Use in the ESL or Basic Education Classroom
Jennifer Boe Mesojedic, special teacher, MN Correctional Facility, Moose Lake
This workshop will include numerous activities and games that you can do with your students to add some excitement to your classroom. The games and activities are focused on practicing sight words, writing, basic math and life skills. You will learn ways to easily modify or make games and activities. Your students will enjoy using the resources and may even be motivated to use them with their children.
12:00-12:45 Lunch
12:45-2:00 Concurrent Session 2 (choose one):
1. Get Your Game On! Hands-on Activities and Simple Games to Use in the ESL or Basic Education Classroom (repeated from Session 1)
Jennifer Boe Mesojedic
2. Best Practices are Brain Compatible
Burgen Young
Exciting advances in neuroscience have inspiring applications to education. Research in neuroscience supports many best practices that ELL teachers use such as teaching language in context and building in opportunities for review. We will begin with an overview of what research in neuroscience has to say about language learning and learning in general. Then we’ll divide into groups to discuss ideas for applying this research to teaching English language learners.
3. Integrating Work Skills in the Classroom
Elizabeth Andress, ELL/ABE Teacher, St. Paul ABE
Work skills can be integrated into any class or curriculum, in classes for ELL learners or native speakers, at any level. This will be a practical, hands-on presentation and workshop to equip you with perspectives and methods that will enhance your teaching and better prepare your learners for the world of work in the U.S. This is different than teaching a "unit" about jobs or job search. Content will include classroom routines, learning activities, rubrics for performance evaluation, workplace norms, and more. Come ready to share your own ideas and learn some new ones.
2:15-2:45 Reflection Groups
2:45-3:00 Evaluations, door prizes & CEU’s
