9:15-10:15 Pre-Employment Academies: A WIN-WIN Partnership Opportunity Between
ABE and WDI – Becky Thofson, Workforce Development, Inc.
For several years Workforce Development, Inc. (WDI) has been operating entry-level pre-employment Academies for our most important industries in the region. This successful model has been developed to assist entry-level workers with the skills and knowledge to make informed choices as they prepare for credentials and entry-level employment in our most dynamic industries. Becky will describe the current activities and direction of the Academies and encourage participation from ABE consortia throughout the region.
10:20-11:20 Concurrent Session 1 (choose one):
1. GED-i Sharing Circle – Theresa Luther-Dolan, Hiawatha Valley ABE (Rm. 203)
This session is for staff who have been using GED-i this year. What are some of the challenges you have encountered and what successes have you seen?
2. Multi-level ESL Classroom Strategies – Burgen Young, MN Literacy Council (Rm. 207)
Burgen will share some strategies that work well with ESL students in a multi-level classroom. (This session addresses the relicensure area of adapting curriculum to meet the needs of varied students)
3. Minnesota’s Essential Skills Credential and Curriculum – Nancy Bjorn Nordeen, St. Paul Adult Learning (Computer Lab, Rm. 217)
Recognize achievement of workplace skills with Minnesota's CASAS-based Essential Skills Credential (ESC). This session will contain a brief overview of the credential program followed by an introduction to the free lesson plans available at www.escurriculum.spps.org. Participants will be encouraged to browse lesson plans and discuss how to use them to help learners advance in the workforce.
4. STAR Reading – Hillary Frazey, Minnesota Correctional Facility, Shakopee (Rm. 201)
Hillary will give an introduction to STAR (STudent Achievement in Reading) a project from the Office of Vocational and Adult Education to provide support and training for intermediate reading teachers using effective, evidence based practices. (This session addresses the relicensure area of reading strategies instruction)
11:30-12:30 Concurrent Session 2 (choose one):
1. Multi-level ESL Classroom Strategies (repeat) – Rm. 207
2. Essential Skills Credential (repeat) – Computer Lab, Rm.217

1:15-2:15 General Session: The Signs of Mental Illness – Steven Norton, PhD – Gym (This session addresses the relicensure area of key warning signs of early onset mental illness)
