9:00-9:30       Registration & Coffee/Rolls
9:30-10:45     Accuplacer Math (Group Session) –
Andy Albee, Robbinsdale Adult                                Academic Program

Need some ideas to help learners transitioning to post-secondary get ready for the math portion of the Accuplacer test?  This fun session will give you some new strategies for helping students conquer those challenging math problems!

10:45-12:00   Concurrent Session #1 (choose one):

1) What is a Learning Disability and How Does an Assessment Work? – Mike Anderson, Learning Disabilities Association (LDA) of MN
This informative session will explain the definition of LD and outline the difficulties LD adults deal with in learning.  Mike will also walk us through the ins and outs of a LD assessment.

2) Alphabetics: Tools, Strategies, and Resources – Carol Fuller, retired ABE teacher
Recent research in adult literacy has determined that ABE students struggling at Beginning and Intermediate levels have difficulties with alphabetics or the sound/word levels of reading proficiency.  They do not have mastery of the English sound/letter system, syllable patterns, roots, prefixes, and/or suffixes.  In addition, they may not show progress on CASAS or TABE and often feel discouraged and disheartened.  This workshop will provide tools, strategies and resources to improve Beginning and Intermediate reading instruction.  (Addresses the relicensure area of continued reading instruction)

12:00-12:45   Lunch

12:45-2:00     Concurrent Session #2 (choose one):

1) Building Vocabulary Skills – Keri Rakes, AEOA
Join Keri to learn some fun, hands-on ideas for helping students build their vocabulary. Keri will include ideas for students transitioning to postsecondary.  (Addresses the relicensure area of continued reading instruction)

2) Science Labs in a Ziploc Bag
Kirsten Fugelseth-Northwest Service Cooperative ABE
You don’t have to know tons of science, perform traditional experiments, or purchase expensive equipment that takes up a lot of space in your classroom to build science skills in literacy, numeracy, critical thinking, and problem solving. You just need a “bag of tricks!” This hands-on session will give you a chance to test out some easy classroom experiments. Take home information and a supply list to begin to create your own “lab in a Ziploc bag!”

2:00-3:30    Warning Signs of Mental Illness (Group Session) – National Alliance on                          Mental Illness (NAMI)

This eye-opening session will teach participants to recognize early warning signs and symptoms of common mental illnesses, as well as strategies for dealing with mental illness in the classroom.  (Addresses the relicensure area of key warning signs of early onset mental illness)
