Agenda
9:00 Registration & Coffee/Rolls
9:15 Unlock the Tests – Jayne Schultz, HMH Publisher/Steck Vaughn
Based on data from the Official GED Tests 2007, the GED Testing Service researched which areas students found most difficult on the Official GED Test. This research was then provided to Steck Vaughn who, in partnership with GED Testing Service, developed a new GED series based on the latest research. The workshop will look at some of the key areas of concern and provide strategies for teachers to use in the classroom.
10:45 Ready to Write for Post-Secondary Success - Kim Johnson, ATLAS – Hamline University
Writing remains an area of struggle for our students transitioning to post-secondary education, in part because of the different expectations and instructional practices between ABE and post-secondary. What kind of writing is expected? How can teachers better align what we are teaching with what students need without losing site of the particular challenges of ESL students? Together, we’ll consider those expectations and challenges and critically examine a rubric used to assess college writing readiness for native speakers for its potential value with ABE students.
12:15 Lunch, catered by Savories of Duluth
1:00 Math Mini Stations - ABE Instructors from Northeast Minnesota
Ready to learn some new ideas for teaching math? This session will allow you to speed through up to eight fun math mini stations to learn some ideas to take back to your classroom and use right away. These hands-on, practical strategies will be applicable to basic skills, GED, and transitions learners.
2:30 Multi-Level Instruction – Burgen Young, the Minnesota Literacy Council
It can be very challenging to teach students of varying abilities. Yet nearly all ABE classes are multilevel in some way, whether the students different in oral skills, literacy skills, or language backgrounds. Come learn effective strategies for busy teachers. Try activities that keep higher level students engaged and give lower level students the extra support they need.
