A) Academic Writing for College-Bound ABE Students – CC 117/118
Laura Funke, Teacher & Director of Learning Communities, Inver Hills Community College; President of MinneTESOL
Preparing ABE students for the writing they will need for college is a challenge. What can you do to help your students make that difficult transition from ABE to college? Laura Funke, a veteran developmental writing and ESL instructor at the community college level, will present some teaching strategies and curriculum guidelines related to writing, including the following: paragraph and essay structure, grammar and editing, academic topic choices, the reading/writing connection, computer literacy, and the role of teacher and peer feedback. Bring your ideas and questions about writing instruction to this interactive presentation.
B) Teaching with Wikis – Business Building B142
Susan Wetenkamp-Brandt, Educational Technology Trainer, Minnesota Literacy Council (MLC)
Have you ever wanted to create your own website for your class or program? With a wiki, it’s as easy as using a word processor. Wikis are collaborative online publishing spaces (free or low-cost for educators) that teachers and students can use to write, share resources, and collaborate on group projects. Come to this workshop to see examples of student and teacher wikis, create your own wiki, and begin adding content and collaborators to your wiki.
