Working with Individuals Experiencing Mental Health Issues 
Suzette Scheele, NAMI (National Alliance on Mental Illness) Minnesota
This workshop provides information on the biological nature of mental illness, signs and symptoms, types of mental illness, impact on individuals and families, strategies for working with mentally ill adults, resources in the community, and provides hope and encouragement for everyone.

10:15-11:30  Reading Instruction for Post-Secondary Preparation
                     Kristine R. Kelly, Robbinsdale Adult Academic Program

This session will address specific reading preparation for students planning to move into post-secondary education at a community or technical college.  Topics addressed will be tips for preparing ABE students for the Accuplacer reading test, developing foundational and advanced developmental reading skills and teaching strategic reading.  The presenter brings the perspective of both an ABE reading teacher and a Hennepin Technical College developmental reading instructor.

11:45-12:45  Overview of the GED-i Program in MN
                     Karla Vien, Dakota Prairie ABE, and Kevin Avise, Burnsville School for Adults

This fall ABE programs across the state will be offering GED prep via distance education utilizing the GED-i.  GED-i is an internet-based GED test prep program developed by the Illinois Community College Board (ICCB) and the Center for the Applications of Information Technologies (CAIT).  GED-i provides an alternative to individuals who are not able to attend a traditional adult education class, as well as additional support for students who are attending a GED preparation class.  This session will provide a general overview of the program and a demonstration of the program from a student’s point of view.
