Master of Arts in Teaching (MAT)

The Master of Arts in Teaching (MAT) prepares students for the initial teaching license while earning a master’s degree. This program is ideal for working adults who want to enter a meaningful profession.

For those who have undergraduate degrees and have decided they want to teach, this is the appropriate degree program.

  • Hamline faculty recognize the work and life experience that incoming students bring to the program. With real-world K-12 experience, faculty will help you develop practical skills, such as classroom management, to ease your transition to a new career in education.
  • Flexible scheduling allows students to continue current employment as they transition toward leading tomorrow’s classrooms. Program attendance may be full-time or part-time, according to your preferred pace of study. Classes typically meet once a week in the evening.
  • Field placements are integrated throughout the program to practice what you learn in your courses. The final semester is spent student teaching to develop the skills, content, and confidence to be a highly qualified teaching professional.
  • Hamline’s innovative program has an exceptional academic reputation and is accredited by the National Council for the Accreditation of Teacher Education (NCATE).
