Affiliate Track of Hamline International Piano Institute The affiliate track of Hamline International Piano Institute is structured to enable advanced performers of a broad variety of ages to participate in the community and activities of the Institute. Admission is by audition. Affiliates study with members and faculty of the piano institute and are able to participate in performance classes and master classes either as auditors or performers. Performing status is granted at the discretion of the Directors. Academic credit is available when prior arrangements are made with requisite institutions – high schools, colleges, graduate programs.
High School Hamline International Piano Institute has cooperative relationships with two High Schools – Nacel International High School on the campus of Hamline University and Shattuck-St. Mary’s School in Faribault, Minnesota. Both schools enable piano institute students to focus on their piano studies whilst at the same time completing a high school diploma. Shattuck-St. Mary’ is a residential boarding school and Nacel International arranges home-stays. Both schools cooperate with the piano institute to provide scholarship aid. Other local high schools may participate with prior approval and arrangements. Bachelor of Arts Members of the piano institute are able to work toward a Bachelor of Arts degree through the Music Department of Hamline University. This Liberal Arts degree is tailored to fit the needs of both specialized professional and broad intellectual education. The College of Liberal Arts at Hamline University (the oldest University in Minnesota) has long been renowned for academic rigor and pedagogic innovation.
Master of Arts in Liberal Studies The Master of Arts in Liberal Studies offered by Hamline's Graduate School of Liberal Studies provides members of the piano institute with a degree blending performance and intellectual study. MALS students range freely among academic, artistic, spiritual and professional issues and ideas whilst still maintaining the necessary emphasis on developing performance skills Artist Diploma Hamline University Artist Diploma, a certificate designed for select post- baccalaureate students who wish to perform. The two-year sequence combines intensive music study with a number of language and general intellectual requirements. Upon completion of the requirements below, the Music Department awards the student a certificate of completion. Post-Baccalaureate Admission Requirements Program entrance is strictly by audition. The Artist Diploma involves highly selective, intensive, and advanced professional studies designed to satisfy needs of highly talented and accomplished musicians. Applicants must have earned a degree from a regionally accredited institution of higher education (or equivalent) and have a cumulative GPA of at least 3.0 from prior undergraduate coursework. After the Music Department auditions and approves qualified applicants for admission, the applicant must complete application materials with the Office of Undergraduate Admissions 651-523-2207. A transcript of previous higher education coursework is required. International Applicants By the end of their first year, international students whose first language is not English must demonstrate a proficiency in English by scoring a minimum of 550 on the written TOEFL examination, 213 on the computer based TOEFL, 79-80 on the internet-based TOEFL, or 7.0 on the IELTS. It may be necessary for a candidate to take English as a Second Language (ESL) training at the University of St. Thomas. At the time of admission, international applicants will be required to provide financial documentation showing sufficient funding to support their studies while in the United States. Tuition Candidates for the Artist Diploma pay the post-baccalaureate certificate rates listed on www.hamline.edu/tuition. Living expenses, course materials, and textbooks are additional. Credit Load/Time Limit Students register for a minimum of 12 credits each fall/spring. Forty-eight credits are required to complete the Artist Diploma, and students complete the Artist Diploma in two years (four semesters) with fall/spring enrollment.
