Discover world-class piano study at Hamline International Piano Institute.

Statement of Purpose

The purpose of Hamline International Piano Institute (HIPI) is to provide world-class advanced piano performance studies in a leading liberal arts university.

Small numbers of highly gifted piano students from around the world are studying under expert resident and guest faculty at Hamline University in individualized programs ranging from high school to graduate degrees.

HIPI offers an array of collaborative and performance opportunities in cooperation with The Schubert Club, Minnesota Orchestra, The Saint Paul Chamber OrchestraMinnesota International Piano-e-Competition, and Minnesota Public Radio.

HIPI is equipped with fine pianos: Yamahas and New York and Hamburg Steinways are available for practice and performance. These include Yamaha CFIII Pro Concert Grands used in the Minnesota International Piano-e-Competition.

Masterclasses are offered by major international artists and are free and open to the public. This year, Hamline will host Jeffrey Siegel, Jerome Rose, Yefim Bronfmann, Pierre-Laurent Aimard, and others.

All courses of study combine pianism with a variety of other intellectual disciplines. Tracks of study depend on student experience:

1.    Affiliates: auditioned students with limited participation
2. Undergraduate
3. Graduate
4. Artist Diploma
