The Certificate in International Journalism Program enables students with advanced language skills and majors in international studies, history, anthropology, or related fields to supplement their program of study with preparation in international journalism. The certificate program combines introductory courses in journalism and communication with advanced seminars, internships, and a capstone project where students can apply both their international expertise and their journalism skills.
Course Work
The certificate requires six courses. Students also complete a study abroad in some field of international area studies and journalism at one of our partner universities or in another approved program.

- COMM 3320: Mass Communications
- COMM 3420: The Media in Global Perspective
- GLOB 5900 Research Seminar or GLOB 5910 Honors Seminar
- while simultaneously taking:
- IJRN 5960: Internship Seminar in International Journalism
- IJRN 5970: Capstone Media Project
Making the Global Local conference
An annual conference that brings together area studies scholars, working journalists, students, and representatives of the local community to focus on major global issues and to critically examine the reporting on those issues.
Student, faculty, & media collaborations
Original reporting projects on global issues in the print media, radio, and television. Our students work on a number of projects reporting on a wide range of transnational issues. Their work has been published or broadcast in a number of media outlets, such as Asian American Press, SPNN International, KFAI Radio, La Prensa de Minnesota, and the Minnesota Women's Press, among others.
Community forums
International teleconferences linking Minnesota citizens with communities abroad to discuss transnational issues of mutual concern. Previous forums have included conversations whit communities in China, South African, and Germany.
Student internship and mentoring
Students participate in internships and mentoring at several Twin Cities news organizations. Students may be placed at the following media organizations:

Student exchange programs
The Certificate in International Journalism Program has established or is in the process of establishing exchanges with:

Tuition and Fees
Tuition and financial aid information is available at the Student Administrative Services web site. Financial aid is available based on individual eligibility.
