Written by three academics, this book is a collection of studies looking at transnationalism and migration from a new perspective. This work focuses a lot on the affects of the nation state on migration. This book includes several good chapters relating to Haitian identity in migrating to the United States.



Castles, Stephen and Mark J. Miller. The Age of Migration: International Population Movements in the World. New York: Guilford Publications, Inc., 1998.



This book analyses the "migration era" that began in the mid 1980s looking at migration movements, why they take place and their effects. Castles and Miller look at examples from all over the world and provide a good overview of migration movements past and present.



Chamberlain, Greg. "Up Through the Roots: Haitian History though 1987." Haiti: Dangerous Crossroads. Boston: South End Press, 1995. 3-22.



This collection of essays on Haitian history and current politics responds to the

recent American debate questioning intervention into Haiti's political affairs.

These essays helped provide good background into Haitian politics.

This article by a professor at Baruch College in the sociology and anthropology department discusses the racial identities Haitian migrants take on in New York City.

Clifford's article also provides a good survey on diasporic literature. He finds the Safran definition too strict.



Cohen, Robin. Global Diasporas: an Introduction. Seattle, Washington: University of Washington Press, 1997.



Cohen introduces the reader of this book to Diasporas categorizing them into five different categories. This book coins the idea of "Cultural Diasporas" using Caribbean migrants as a model of this, including Haitians. This books gave yet another perspective on the definition of Diaspora.



Dupy: Haiti in the World Economy: Class, Race and Underdevelopment Since 1700. Boulder, Colorado: Westview Press, Inc. 1989.



This book discusses French colonialism, the plantation system, the rise of the Haitian peasantry, the race divisions after the US occupation and the Duvalier dictatorship. I used this book as a background on the affects of race in Haiti.

Farmer, Paul. The Uses of Haiti. Monroe, Maine: Common Courage Press, 1994.



With an introduction by Noam Chompsky, this book provides insight into Haitian history from colonialism through Duvalier, to the present. It shows how Haiti has been used and abused from the perspective of an American professor who has spent much time researching AIDS in Haiti. I used this book mainly for background on Haiti.

This enormous survey of American immigrant cultures provides a comprehensive section on Haitian immigrants in the United States. This book provided information found in few others sources on the first wave of Haitian immigrants with the Haitian Revolution.

This final chapter to the Glick Schiller gives an overview of transnationalism in

the United States. Goldberg devotes a large portion of the article to the Haitian case.

This lengthy report by the Organization of American States details the human

rights abuses towards Haitians in the Dominican Republic. It provided good

background of Haitian life on the Dominican Bateys.



Safran, William. "Diasporas in Modern Societies: Myths of Homeland and Return."

Diasporas. Spring 1991. Volume 1. Number 1. 83-99.



Safran gives a clear definition of a diaspora in the article saying a diaspora must

exhibit six characteristics and uses the Jewish diaspora as a model. This article is

important in looking at migration literature as a whole.

This Macalester College Honors Project looks at the Haitian women in their

migration to the Dominican Republic. As migration theory often overlooks

women, this study provides good insight into female Haitian migrants and how

they identify themselves in the Dominican Republic. It also provides good

historical background of Dominico-Haitian relations.

This survey of Latin America by two university professors provides very good

background on Haiti, the Dominican Republic and their relationship.



Stepick, Alex. Haitian Refugees in the U.S. London: Expedite Graphic Limited, 1986.

This short, though informational, booklet gives a brief history of Haiti and Haitian

immigration into the United States, the Dominican Republic and the Bahamas. It

also details US policy towards Haitians. The material was very useful, though

dated as it was published in 1986 and much has changed politically in Haiti since.
