Study Abroad

Every student is strongly encouraged to explore the many study abroad opportunities that are available at Hamline. The opportunity to live in a foreign country and experience a completely different culture is an invaluable experience that will provide a lifetime of rewards.

The Theatre Arts Department offers a January term study aboard opportunity Theatre in Britain that is offered in association with the UMAIE (Upper Midwest Association for Intercultural Education). Profs. Levy and Wallace lead the course, usually every other year. The next time Hamline faculty will lead this trip will be in January, 2010. This year, 2009, there will be a Theatre J-term in New York

J-Term in New York

This year Hamline Theatre will be taking students to New York. This course examines the current American Theatre and engages students in the theatre as active audience members, inspiring them to look at theatre and all art through critical lens. The course encourages you to make a personal connection to works of art by examining how these works resonate in this cultural moment. Because New York is the center of commercial theatre production, there is no better place to engage in this study. The course is meant to be more affordable than most, so there will be a home component in the Twin Cities during which we will read plays and discuss issues in the modern theatre. Then, there will be a ten day trip to New York to attend plays and meet with theatre artists as well as see some important historical and cultural sights. We will engage in a process to look at how to examine plays both on the page and on the stage.

Things to Consider

If you are thinking about any study abroad opportunity take a few moments to talk with your advisor and with other students who may have done a similar program. You will need to look at:

  • How the program will fit within your progress toward graduation.
  • What Hamline Plan requirements you might be able to fulfill
  • The costs of the program (almost any study abroad program will involve expenses beyond the course fees.)
  • How the program fits into your overall development.
  • How the study abroad opportunity may mesh with plans for a collaborative research project, an Honors project, or further your creative and professional goals.
  • What grant or scholarship money might be available to assist you in paying for the costs of the program.
  • Any special issues that you might need to consider depending on the part of the world you are traveling to. (Medical concerns, access, special clothing, language requirements)

Last Thoughts

  • Many people begin planning their study abroad opportunities a year or more in advance, although you don't always need all this lead time.
  • Some people will study abroad more than once. For example, a theatre student went on the January term Theatre in Britain course to get a sense of the culture and to audition for acting schools and make some connections. The following year she applied and was accepted into an advanced actor training program in England.
  • Your study abroad does not need to be limited to theatre related courses. Theatre students have gone to China, Spain, France and a number of other countries as their interests dictated.
