Joseph Peschek was born in Tacoma, Washington. He graduated from the University of Washington in 1974 with a major in Political Science. After three years spent experiencing the real world as a Seattle bus driver, he entered a graduate program in Political Science at the University of Massachusetts, Amherst, from which he received his Ph.D. in 1984.
Professor Peschek came to Hamline in 1987, after temporary stints teaching in southeast Texas and upstate New York. He received tenure in 1993 and was promoted to full professor in 1999. In addition to teaching the core American Government and Politics course, he teaches courses on Presidential Politics, Parties and Elections, and American Foreign Policy, as well as several courses in political theory.
Professor Peschek's scholarly research focuses on contemporary American politics. He is the co-editor of Voices of Dissent: Critical Readings in American Politics, a reader used in college courses now in its seventh edition. From 2002 to 2008 he served as the editor of the scholarly journal New Political Science. He occasionally provides analysis of national politics for the Twin Cities area media. Professor Peschek's hobbies include reading, walking, listening to music, and browsing in used bookstores.
