WORKSHOP IN HISTORY

The purpose of the course is to acquaint the students with the work of the historian. What does he/she do? How are historians teaching/writing history? Are there more than one kind of historians and histories?

The focus of the course, and the vehicle which will help us achieve our goals, is the ethnic composition of the population of Minnesota.

In this class student participation is required. Class participation will constitute 20% of your grade. Two short (7 pages double spaced) papers will comprise 30% of your final grade while a research paper will comprise the last 50% of the final grade for the class. The research paper will be 25 double spaced typed pages (minimum). As part of your research paper assignment you will make a 15 minute oral presentation (details will be explained in class).

F= unacceptable level of performance.
D= work below the minimum acceptable.
C= minimum requirements for the class have been achieved.
B= above average work.
A=
exceptionally good work.

Please note that both class attendance and being in class on time are mandatory. Tardiness will not be tolerated. One unexcused absence will result in half a grade reduction. Two unexcused absences will result in a whole grade reduction. A third unexcused absence will result in an automatic F for the course. Late work will not be accepted without the instructor?s permission in advance.  Failure to complete any one of the assignments will result in an automatic F for the course.
