Welcome to the Hamline University Chemistry Department Home Page. The Chemistry Department offers many courses and collaborative research opportunities aimed at exploring the diverse chemical phenomena that shape our world.
The Department of Chemistry prepares students for advanced degree work and professional opportunities in chemical industry. The chemistry major is also an integral part of the liberal arts tradition, offering students the opportunity to study the philosophical and theoretical basis of molecular sciences at both the introductory and advanced levels. Because chemistry is such a "central" science, a wide variety of opportunities await those with training in this field.
The Hamline chemistry major is approved by the American Chemical Society committee on professional training. Our production of chemistry majors and Ph.D candidates is substantial. Eight to 14 chemistry and biochemistry majors graduate each year, 70 percent of chemistry majors earn the ACS-certified major. Hamline is frequently in the top 50 undergraduate schools in the United States producing ACS-certified graduates. Approximately half of Hamline's chemistry graduates seek advanced degrees in chemistry, another 15-20 percent enter professional schools, while the remaining find employment in the chemical industry. The quality of chemistry graduates from Hamline is reflected in the department's rank of 33rd out of 101 selected undergraduate colleges in the origin of Ph.D. recipients in chemistry from 1920 to 1980.
