Public Administration Certificates

The Hamline School of Business is pleased to announce 4 new public administration certificates: Corrections Administration, Economic Development, Labor Relations, and Public Safety Administration. These new certificate programs join the Minnesota Public Works Association Leadership Academy, which grants a certificate in Public Works Administration from both Hamline University and from the Minnesota Public Works Association.

Corrections Administration                                                              Starts Fall 2009

Administrator and managers in the field of corrections are responsible for the lives, custodial safety, and well-being of those in their care and custody. The Corrections Administration certificate will cover the many controversial emerging issues in corrections administration from theory to practice.

Economic Development                                                             Starts January 2010

The Economic Development certificate is designed to give the participant an in-depth look at the economic development process from the perspective of both government agency and private sector developers.

Labor Relations                                                                         Starts January 2010

The Labor Relations Certificate will provide practical knowledge tools and skills HR professional and supervisors need to manage effectively in the public sector collective bargaining environment.

Public Safety Administration                        Fire & EMS: Fall 2009, Police: Fall 2010 

The Certificate in Public Safety Administration is designed for fire, emergency service, and law enforcement personnel who seek advanced study in public safety administration.

Public Works                                                                                 Currently offered

The Hamline School of Business also awards a public administration certificate through the Minnesota Public Works Association Leadership Academy. If you work in the field of public works, the MPWA Leadership Academy program increases your effectiveness as a public works manager and prepares you to be an industry leader.

         
 Certificates Overview

All students must complete ninety hours of training in seven monthly sessions over an eight-month period, with no training session in December. The program is deliberately scheduled to span two calendar years so the cost of certification can be spread over two budget cycles. Students who complete the coursework will receive a certificate from the Hamline School of Business Public Administration program. Cost for each program is $2,600.

All participants are eligible to earn the certificates regardless of prior academic experience.  Completion of the program will result in two elective course credits for the participants eligible to earn master’s level course credit.  Students who choose to continue working toward the Master of Arts in Public Administration at Hamline University must have a bachelor’s degree and meet the requirements for admission to the Hamline School of Business.

 Location

All classes for Hamline public administration certificates are scheduled at the Hamline University Minneapolis Center, 1600 Utica Ave S., near the intersection of Highway 100 and 394 in St. Louis Park. The Hamline University Minneapolis Center is conveniently located with easy freeway access and contains student services, admissions, and a Hamline University bookstore. 

 Faculty

Hamline’s program is rooted in a practitioner philosophy. The faculty teaching in this program have years of experience working in their respective fields and bring a combination of theory and experience to the classroom.
