Research at Bush Library

These tutorials are designed to provide training in doing research to students in Hamline's online classes and to familiarize them with the resources and services available through Bush Library.

Before you start: None of these lessons will be useful unless you practice. As you learn each of the resources, play with it a bit before you go on to the next. Also, practice navigating to them from the Bush Library home page so that you become familiar with where they can be found.

Demos and Other Links: Each of these lessons contains animated demonstrations called Demos. Here are a few tips to using them and to navigating the links embedded in the lessons.

To play the Demos, you'll need to have Flash loaded on your computer (many animated greeting cards use this). If you do not have it, download it here.

A word if you are not in the Twin Cities metro area: Some of these lessons were written based on the assumption that students are within the Twin Cities metro area and are able to use Bush Library in person as a resource for books and the regular interlibrary loan service. For those of you who are not able to make it to the campus, alternatives are suggested in the tutorial as well.

A word on using your public library for academic research: Basically, it's best not to. A public library's purpose is very different from an academic's; they collect very different materials for a very different reason. Unless it is a very large public library, such as Minneapolis Public, these libraries do not purchase materials or subscribe to databases to support scholarly research at the college or graduate school level.  However, you can try and use your local library for interlibrary loan.  be aware that they may charge you a fee for the service.
