ActionBioscience.org
"ActionBioscience.org is a non-commercial, educational web site created to promote bioscience literacy.... [It] provides articles by scientists, science educators, and science students on issues related to seven bioscience challenges: environment, biodiversity, genomics, biotechnology, evolution, new frontiers in science, and bioscience education. In addition, the web site provides educators with original lessons and resources to enhance bioscience teaching."

Animal Diversity Web
"[An] online database of animal natural history, distribution, classification, and conservation biology. ...  [It] has thousands of species accounts about individual animal species. These may include text, pictures of living animals, photographs and movies of specimens, and/or recordings of sounds. Students write the text of these accounts and we cannot guarantee their accuracy. [It also has] descriptions of levels of organization above the species level, especially phyla, classes, and in some cases, orders and families.  Hundreds of hyperlinked pages and images illustrate the traits and general biology of these groups. Professional biologists prepare this part."

Atlas of the Human Body
Clear diagrams and descriptions of the human body include: the brain, nervous and circulatory systems, and muscles.  From the AMA.

BioInteractive
A collection of virtual labs, biological animations and other learning modules, including the Virtual Transgenic Fly Lab.

DNA Interactive
From the Dolan DNA Learning Center, Cold Spring Harbor Laboratory.

Gene Almanac
From the Dolan DNA Learning Center, Cold Spring Harbor Laboratory.

Genetic Science Learning Center
"Helping people understand how genetics affects their lives and society."  From the Genetic Science Learning Center at the University of Utah.

Grzimeks Animal Life Encyclopedia
"Some reviewers call Grzimek's Animal Life Encyclopedia the best reference work on animals ever published... Thorough articles familiarize readers with animals found everywhere on the globe, detailing their life cycles, predators, food systems, overall ecology and much more."  17 volumes

Ocean Explorer
"An educational Internet offering for all who wish to learn about, discover, and virtually explore the ocean realm. It provides public access to current information on a series of NOAA scientific and educational explorations and activities in the marine environment. The site provides a platform to follow explorations in near real-time, learn about exploration technologies, observe remote marine flora and fauna in the colorful multimedia gallery, read about NOAA’s 200-year history of ocean exploration, and discover additional NOAA resources in a virtual library."

Patuxent Bird Identification InfoCenter
"Photographs, songs, videos, identification tips, maps, and life history information for North American birds."  From the U.S. Geological Society.

Protocol Online
"A database of research protocols in a variety of life science fields. It contains protocols contributed by worldwide researchers as well as links to web protocols hosted by worldwide research labs, biotech companies, personal web sites."

Virtual Body

Visible Human Server
"A virtual anatomic construction kit on the web using the Visible Human dataset. The applets available on this site provide the following features:

  • Extract slices, curved surfaces, and slice animations from both datasets (male and female)
  • Interactively navigate by slicing through the male dataset in real-time
  • Construct 3D anatomical scenes using combinations of slices and 3D models of internal structures from the male dataset, and extract 3D animations
  • Add voice comments to video sequences generated using the applets
