Use ILLiad to request:
- Books not in CLICnet
- Articles not available at Hamline's libraries (Bush and Law)

A note about using ILLiad to borrow a textbook instead of purchasing it...
Basically, it's not a good idea:
- Most libraries do not purchase textbooks
- If they do, they are on reserve for their own students--they will not lend them
- If they do, they are usually older editions than the one you need
- Most interlibrary loans cannot be renewed:
You will only be able to check it out for one month

More About Interlibrary Loan and ILLiad
Bush Library ILL service is available to current students, faculty, and staff of Hamline University's College and the Graduate Schools, Programs, and Centers. Hamline Law students, faculty, and staff will be referred to the Law Library for ILL assistance. All others, including alumni, NACEL students, and members of the general public are encouraged to consult with their local public library for this service.
There is no charge for ILL.
Copyright restrictions do not allow us to fill requests for an entire journal issue.
Contact the Reference Desk if you have any questions or if you need help verifying whether an item is owned by Hamline. Delivery time for this service varies depending on such factors as availability and the time of year. Please plan your research accordingly.
Articles: Delivery time of an electronic or photocopied article will vary depending on where it is coming from. Articles from other CLIC institutions and the University of Minnesota generally arrive in 3 to 5 working days. Articles from other institutions, especially those that are out-of-state, generally take 10 to 14 working days to arrive. You will be notified by e-mail when your article is ready for pick-up. Most articles are now delivered electronically and can be "picked-up" by logging into your Illiad account. Photocopied articles are held at the Bush Library Circulation Desk for pick-up.
Books from the University of Minnesota usually take about 3-5 working days to arrive. If we need to go out-of-state, it usually takes 10-14 working days. However, some requests can take up to 2 months to fill. Borrowers are notified by email when materials become available. You may also stop by or call the Circulation Desk to see if your book has arrived. Be sure to pick up your materials as soon as possible; the loan period for these materials is set by the lending institution and the clock starts ticking when the material arrives in our office, not when you pick it up.
Note: Books borrowed via ILLiad CANNOT BE RENEWED.

Entering your personal information into the ILLiad system means you will not have to supply the information again when making future requests.
Having your e-mail and regular mail addresses on file with our Interlibrary Loan Office enables us to notify you promptly and deliver materials accurately when your request arrives in the library.
By specifying your Hamline Username and Password, you will have secure access to information about your requests. You will also be able to review the list of items you have requested in the past.

What is ILLiad?
ILLiad is the electronic system you use to request an item through Interlibrary Loan. The name ILLiad can be thought of as an acronym for InterLibrary Loan internet accessible database.
How is ILLiad better than traditional ILL systems?
- You will find it easier to submit your interlibrary loan requests. With ILLiad, you enter your name, address, and other personal information into the system only once, at the time of your first request.
- Your request will be handled more rapidly and accurately.
- You can get many of your photocopies more quickly through Electronic Delivery.
- You can get information about the status of your request through the Web at any time from any location without having to call the ILL Department.
- Library personnel are able to serve you better because all data about your request and its handling is stored in a searchable database. We are able to respond quickly to your inquiries about your request. We are also able to gather statistical information about the performance of the libraries that lend to us, enabling us to make better decisions when choosing a lender to supply an item.
Are there any disadvantages to the electronic system?
Some people might find it troublesome to have to log into ILLiad using a username and password. We believe this is less trouble than traditional paper and electronic systems which require you to enter your personal information with each new request.
Why do I need a username and password to use ILLiad?
Your username and password allows us to give you secure access to information about your interlibrary loan requests. We can also enable you to edit your personal information such as your address or phone number.
What if I forget my password?
Students: Go to Lookup Your Username and Password (ITS help for students).
Faculty and Staff: Go to Lookup Your Username and Password (ITS help for faculty and staff).
What Web browser should I use?
You need a Web browser that can handle forms, tables, and, preferably, one that can handle frames. We recommend either Netscape Navigator version 3.0 or greater or Microsoft Internet Explorer version 3.0 or greater. Both browsers are available for the Windows 3.x, Windows 95 or NT, and Macintosh O/S operating systems. Netscape Navigator is available for UNIX.
Is security a problem if I use a public workstation?
Yes. Web browsers cache information and create a history file on the local workstation. This allows a subsequent user of the workstation to access the system under your name using the browser's Back button to recall a page from the cache, or by finding a page with your personal information in the browser's history file. If you are concerned about the security of your interlibrary loan requests, you can take the following steps:
- Access ILLiad only from your personal computer or an otherwise secure workstation.
- When using a public access workstation:
- Delete from the history file those pages that contain your personal information.
- Exit from the Web browser before you leave the workstation. This prevents the Back button from accessing the pages you were using.
Why don't I see all my older requests when I look at my request history?
From time to time we purge older records from ILLiad. Our policy is to keep requests online for 4 years in order to comply with record keeping requirements of the copyright law.
What is Electronic Delivery?
Many libraries ship photocopies of articles to us in electronic format. In the past we printed these articles before delivering them to you. Now, through ILLiad, we will deliver these articles electronically in PDF format (Adobe's Portable Document Format). You can read more about electronic delivery on the Electronic Delivery Information page.
Who do I contact if I have problems with or questions about ILLiad?
Contact the InterLibrary Loan office at (651) 523-2392 or e-mail
Why does my browser say that you're sending a cookie? What's in it?
The Active Server Pages technology that we use to provide live reporting for the web sends a Session ID to be stored on your machine. You can refuse this cookie and still be able to use the ILL web pages and ILLiad without any problems.
