Off-Campus Access to Bush Library Subscribed Databases

If you are off-campus when you click on the title of a database,
you will first be directed to Hamline's proxy server

What is it? | How does it work? | How do I login?  | Troubleshooting

What is it?
The proxy server (EZProxy) makes it possible for you to access our subscribed resources--including databases and netLibrary books-- from home. These resources are licensed for use by the Hamline community only. Because of this restriction, we need to verify that anyone accessing these databases is a current member of the Hamline community.

How does it work?
When you use a database from a computer on campus, the database you are going to recognizes the IP address (the "address" of your computer) as a Hamline address and allows you to use the database without further authentication.

When you are off-campus and use the off-campus links provided by your library, you are sent to the Hamline proxy server first. When you fill out the form, the information you enter is validated against Hamline's administrative database. If your registration is current, you are connected to the database you chose because the proxy server makes it look like you're coming from a Hamline computer.

How do I login?

Students:   Use your Netmail username and password.

    • Students must be currently registered in a degree or certificate program.
    • Working on a capstone or dissertation but not taking a class? You still need to be registered every semester to use the Hamline Libraries and their services. Contact your program office for more information

Continuing Studies students:  see Alternate login below

Faculty and Staff:  Use your Novell username and password. This is the same password you use to login to the Hamline network from your computer.

            • If you are adjunct faculty (i.e. you don't have a computer on campus and, therefore, no Novell username and password), the easiest thing to do will be to get a Hamline ID and login using your CLICnet barcode. Or, you can request a GroupWise account by contacting the ITS Help Desk at x2220.
            • If you have both student and faculty/staff status, the easiest thing to do is use the CLICnet Barcode form. If you prefer not to login using that method, use the status reflected on your Hamline ID.

Alternate login:  You may choose, instead, to login with your CLIC Library Barcode (the top number on the back of your Hamline ID). If you choose this method, enter your barcode under Username.  Change the default setting in the Hamline Affiliation dropdown menu to the proper affiliation and DO NOT enter anything in the Password text box.  We recognize that our Continuing Studies students might not have a physical Hamline ID.  However, they can find their library barcode number in Piperline.  In their personal accounts under Personal Information they will find a link that says Hamline ID card Information.  here they will find the 14 digit library number.

          Troubleshooting Checklist

          ___ 1.  Browser Privacy Level.

If you are having problems accessing the proxy login page, check your browser's privacy level; it may be set too high, resulting in the page being blocked. From your browser toolbar, go to:
Tools > Internet Options > Privacy
Lower the privacy setting to allow cookies to pass from our proxy server to your computer for your first login attempt. Once you have logged in one time, you can raise the privacy level back to the previous level.

More information about cookies: If you are using Internet Explorer as your browser and it rejects our proxy server's cookie, you will see an eye with a red minus sign on the status bar at the bottom of the page.

          1. Double-click on that icon to see a list of web sites with rejected cookies.
          2. Find and double-click on Hamline's Proxy Login page
          3. Choose the option, Allow This Site to Use Cookies
          4. Click on OK. This should allow you to login the next time you access the page.

___ 2.  Check for any pop-up blockers that may be running.

You can disable your blocker/s for this specific page.  See your blocker’s help file for directions.  If you have more than one blocker running (e.g. Internet Explorer and Google Toolbar), be sure that both are set to allow the proxy page.

___ 3.  Check your Hamline email account username and password
                      (NetMail or GroupWise).

If you tried logging in with your Hamline username and password, login to your account to make sure that you are using the correct/current username and password.  If you don’t know your login, go to Piperline > then, to Personal Information > View Hamline Computer Accounts > Netmail / Groupwise.  Students:  If you aren’t able to login to your Piperline account, contact SAS (Student Administrative Services) at 651-523-3000.  Faculty and Staff:  contact Human Resources.

More information about Netmail:  All degree- and certificate-seeking students, upon registering at Hamline, are assigned a Netmail account for e-mail. If your username is given in your Piperline account, but your password is not, simply go to Update E-mail Address and Reset your Netmail password. You do not need to know your previous password to do this. This takes about 15 minutes. Questions? E-mail admin@hamline.edu   For more information click here.

___ 4.  Check your Hamline Library barcode number.

This is the top number on the back of your Hamline ID. If you do not yet have an ID, stop by the Office of Safety and Security to have one made; it will take just a couple of minutes. Students need to be currently registered in a degree or certificate program.

If you tried logging in using your CLICnet library barcode number, check to see whether it’s the same number as the one listed in your Piperline account.  To do this, go to Piperline > Personal Information > Hamline ID Card Information > Library Barcode.  If it's not the same, contact Safety and Security (x2100).  If you aren’t able to login to your Piperline account, contact Student Administrative Services at x3000.

          ___ 5.  Try another browser.

If you’re using Internet Explorer (download http://www.microsoft.com/windows/ie/ie6/downloads/critical/ie6sp1/default.mspx), try Mozilla Firefox (download http://www.mozilla.com/en-US/firefox), or vice versa, or any other browser (Netscape, Opera, etc.).

___ 6.  Are you on AOL or CompuServ?

Their browsers will not work with the proxy server.  Go ahead and access the internet with whichever of these services you use.  Then, once you're connected to the internet, open up another browser and use that to access the databases/proxy server.  If you have a Windows computer, the easiest thing to do is open it via the Programs menu.  Or, download and open a different browser (see #5, above)

___ 7.  Try accessing the proxy server on another computer, if possible.

For example, if you’re at work try it at home, or vice versa.

___ 8.  Are you trying to login from your workplace?

There’s a good chance that the firewall at your workplace is blocking the proxy server.  Work with your workplace IT staff to determine if this is the case.  If it is, they can open your firewall to watson.hamline.edu, TCP ports 2048 through 2500.

___9.  Scan your machine for malware and viruses.

If you already have antivirus and/or anti-malware software on your computer, do a scan to check for viruses and malware. If you don't have antivirus software, Hamline provides a free download of Sophos Antivirus - it's available in Piperline under Additional Services > Software Downloads. (And remember, you should only have one antivirus program on your computer at a time.) Some good anti-malware programs are Ewido, AdAware, and SpyBot
You should always have antivirus software on your computer, and if you use the internet frequently, make sure to scan your computer with anti-spyware software at least a couple times a month.
