Blackboard Readings

You have two options:

        • Upload the reading to Blackboard
        • Link to the reading from Blackboard

Upload the Reading to Blackboard

Important: This option should only be used if you are using the article under the spontaneous use clause of Fair Use. If you plan to use this article and this method for more than one semester, you should obtain copyright permission.

If you have a print copy of the article (not an electronic file):

  • scan it
  • save it
  • post it to Blackboard

For assistance with this, contact your program assistant.

If the article is full text online and does not have a stable url:

  • Copy the article using your favorite method (e.g. right click on article and choose Select All, then right-click again and choose Copy. Exact procedure may vary a bit depending on database properties, especially if the document is a .pdf file).
  • Paste it into Blackboard:
      • Go to: your course
      • Go to: Control Panel
      • Go to: Content Areas: Documents
      • Go to: choose Add Item
      • Paste text (crtl-v) in Text box

Link to the Reading from Blackboard:

The Hamline libraries subscribe to a growing number of quality full text databases, from Ebsco's Academic Search Premier to Education Full Text.  If there is a full text database article or netLibrary e-book that you would like your students to read, you can provide one-click access from Blackboard to the reading.  Note:  Linking does not require copyright permission.

1.  Before you can do this, you need to answer two questions:

Is this article online?
Not all journals/articles--or even nearly all--are online. First, the publisher must be willing to provide the full text of their articles to database providers. Then, we must have a subscription to that database. For more information, see:  Is This Journal Online?

Does it have a stable url?
In order to link to an article, it must have a stable url (sometimes called a persistent or durable link):  a specific address on the web. Some databases don't have permanent "homes" on the web for their articles; a temporary "location" is created during your search. Unfortunately, this includes databases such as Lexis-Nexis Academic Universe.  If this is the case, see Upload the Reading to Blackboard.  See below for instructions for specific Bush Library databases.

2.  Very Important:  Proxy URL
Many of our students are off-campus and will be accessing our licensed databases via Hamline's proxy server.  See The Hamline University Libraries Proxy Server for more information.  Each link to a licensed article or e-book must be preceded by Hamline's Proxy Server URL:

http://ezproxy.hamline.edu:2048/login?url=

3.  Database-by-Database Instructions
Unfortunately, every database is constructed a little differently.  Following are instructions on providing readings from each of Bush Library's full text databases.

Bush Library databases, Subject List (includes database descriptions and links)

Bush Library databases, Title List (includes database descriptions and links)

Law Library databases

Academic
OneFile

1. Copy and paste Hamline's proxy server address:

http://ezproxy.hamline.edu:2048/login?url=

 2.  Add the stable url of the article.  To find this, click on Bookmark This Document, in green font, under the title of the article.

Academic Search Premier

1. Copy and paste Hamline's proxy server address:

http://ezproxy.hamline.edu:2048/login?url=

2. Add the stable url of the article.  The url is listed in the citation under Persistent Link to this Record

Example: http://ezproxy.hamline.edu:2048/login?url=http://search.epnet.com/login.aspx?direct=true&db=ufh&an=15403045

ACS Web Editions and Archive

From the Results screen (the list of articles you got when you did your search), Locate the number/letter sequence following the acronym DOI. The DOI (Digital Object Identifier)--this is a unique number for your article.

  • In Blackboard, type Hamline's proxy server address:
    http://ezproxy.hamline.edu:2048/login?url=
  • Then, add:

    http://pubs3.acs.org/acs/journals/doilookup?in_doi=

  • Finally, paste your article's DOI at the end.

        Example: http://ezproxy.hamline.edu:2048/login?url=http://pubs3.acs.org/acs/journals/doilookup?in_doi=10.1021/ja028495a

Annual Reviews

1. Copy and paste Hamline's proxy server address:

http://ezproxy.hamline.edu:2048/login?url=

2. Copy and past the web page url ("address") of the article from your browser.

Example:
http://ezproxy.hamline.edu:2048/login?url=http://arjournals.annualreviews.org
/doi/full/10.1146/annurev.soc.29.110702.110112

Alternative:  Academic Search Premier contains the full text of all but the current issue of most Review titles. This is good news because we occasionally have problems with off-campus access through the Annual Reviews database--Academic Search Premier is more straightforward.

Anthro-Source

1. Copy and paste Hamline's proxy server address:

http://ezproxy.hamline.edu:2048/login?url=

CIAO
(Columbia International Affairs Online)

The documents in CIAO may be either .html or .pdf format, depending on the source and the search method you used to find it (browse or keyword search). If your document's url ends in .html, it should be ok to copy and paste to our proxy url. If it is a .pdf document, you may need to hover over the link to see the url in your status bar, then type the url into your document (copy and paste won't work with this method).

Example:
http://ezproxy.hamline.edu:2048/login?url=http://www.ciaonet.org/pbei/bi/joc01/joc01.pdf

Communi-cation and Mass Media Complete

1. Copy and paste Hamline's proxy server address:

Education
Full Text

1. Copy and paste Hamline's proxy server address:

http://ezproxy.hamline.edu:2048/login?url=

2.  Add the stable url of the article, which is at the bottom of the citation, under Article Link.

You may link to either the .html or .pdf version of the article--plain .html usually loads more quickly, especially for those accessing it from off-campus-- although the .pdf version may have tables or other graphics that the .html version does not.

a.)  Click on Click to copy the HTML [or PDF] full text article link

b.)  A message box will open that says "URL copied to clipboard."

c.)  Click on OK.  This "loads" the url onto your mouse, i.e. when you give the Paste command, whether from the toolbar or by right-clicking your mouse, the url will appear.

d.)  Go to your Blackboard course and paste the url immediately following the proxy url (that you already pasted there).

e.)  This url is more than you need!  Next, you need to remove the superfluous html code and strip it down to just the url by removing everything outside of the quotation marks (including the quotes themselves):

For example, if you paste this:

<a href="http://vnweb.hwwilsonweb.com/hww/jumpstart.jhtml?recid=0bc05f7a67b1790e52524b6a7a73d197b0614517d8a07

Delete the text in gold, so that what remains is the url without the html code (you don't need it in Blackboard):

http://vnweb.hwwilsonweb.com/hww/jumpstart.jhtml?recid=0bc05f7a67b1790e52524b6a7a73d197b0614517d8a07
39f493aef310ed4c1b46ce0566b77ffdbea&fmt=H

Example of the complete link, including proxy url:

http://ezproxy.hamline.edu:2048/login?url=http://vnweb.hwwilsonweb.com/hww/jumpstart.jhtml?recid=0bc05f7a67b1790e52524b6a7a73d197b0614517d

ERIC

ERIC: The citations reside in CSA (Cambridge Scientific Abstracts), but the full text ERIC documents reside on the Department of Education's new ERIC website. When you click on Full Text Linking, a .pdf document opens, but you will not be able to see the url. The easiest thing to do is:

  • Copy the ERIC document number ("Accession number") with your mouse
  • In a new window, go to the Dept. of Education's ERIC website: http://www.eric.ed.gov
  • Paste the ERIC document number into the Search box
  • Click on Search
  • This should take you directly to the document you need. Copy the page url from the Address box to use for your link from Blackboard.
  • You do not need to add the proxy server address because it's a free web site.
