Reference Books: Business-related Highlights from our Reference Collection.
The following are subscription databases available to the Hamline community only. These are the best (most appropriate for academic study) places to start when looking for articles on your topic.
Business Source Premier. The place to start. Business Source Premier provides full text for nearly 3,800 scholarly business journals, including full text for more than 1,100 peer-reviewed business publications. Coverage includes virtually all subject areas related to business. This database provides full text (PDF) for more than 350 of the top scholarly journals dating as far back as 1922. This database is updated on a daily basis. Title list of journals included in this product. Includes annual reports (on the green navigation bar, click on Company Profiles).
Regional Business News. This database provides comprehensive full text coverage for regional business publications. Regional Business News incorporates coverage of 75 business journals, newspapers and newswires from all metropolitan and rural areas within the United States. Title list of journals included in this product.
Expanded Academic ASAP. "From arts and the humanities to social sciences, science and technology, this database meets research needs across all academic disciplines. Access scholarly journals, news magazines, and newspapers." Because it is multi-disciplinary, it can be a good place to start virtually every search. (For example, if your topic is management-related, you may find articles from the field of psychology that will be useful and that would not appear in a search of a business database.) Includes some full text articles. To see a list of journals included in this index and which are available full text, click on Title List from the menu on the left side of the search screen.
JSTOR: ("Journal
storage") A database with a difference: it does NOT include the 3 - 5 most
recent years of journals; however, it does include the full run of the journal
up to that point. In the case of some journals, that means the coverage goes
back to the 19th century. The journals are all scholarly; every article is available
full text.

Lexis-Nexis Academic An outstanding resource for newspapers and trade and industry magazines (also includes legal and medical industry information.) While much of the material would not be considered scholarly (it's news, not research), it's a good place to read about what's happening in specific businesses/industries (in the business section), and around the world (in the newspaper section). Includes the full text of the Minneapolis Star Tribune and other regional, national, and international newspapers (both in English and in native languages). Virtually all of the content in this database is full text.
PsycInfo: "Provides access to international literature in psychology and related disciplines. Unrivaled in its depth of psychological coverage and respected worldwide for its high quality, the database is enriched with literature from an array of disciplines related to psychology such as psychiatry, education, business, medicine, nursing, pharmacology, law, linguistics, and social work." No full text.
Business and Management Practices. "Contains online articles about the practical aspects of business management; provides real-world know-how that focuses on how organizations make and implement decisions, develop and launch new strategies, and plan for change; includes case studies and how-to articles; searches for business concepts, industries, and specific departments within an organization. No full text.
Wilson Business Abstracts. "Provides complete and accurate indexing and abstracting of leading business magazines. Offers 50-to-150-word abstracts written by subject experts for each article and gives citations (but not abstracts) for book reviews." No full text. FirstSearch password is required for both on- and off-campus access (contact the Reference Desk, 651-523-2375).
EconLit: "Journals, books, and working papers on economics." No full text. FirstSearch password is required for both on- and off-campus access (contact the Reference Desk, 651-523-2375).
Project Muse: A humanities-oriented database, but includes a growing number of business-related journals, including Advertising and Society Review and Journal of Money, Credit and Banking. All articles are full text.
Dissertation Abstracts: Lengthy abstracts of every doctoral dissertation completed in the US at an accredited institution for the last 150 years. Includes some master's theses and foreign language dissertations. FirstSearch password is required for both on- and off-campus access (contact the Reference Desk, 651-523-2375). If, after reading the abstract, you'd like to see the entire dissertation, use Interlibrary Loan to request it. Most institutions do loan out their dissertations.
