Introduction:
The
following includes general information on using netLibrary. For
more detailed information,
click on the Help
tab in netLibrary.
netLibrary
and the CLIC Collection
netLibrary is the vendor which provides access to the
CLIC collection: As of September, 2004, our collection consists
of more than 14,000 books on a variety of academic and popular topics.
Many of these books were purchased for Minnesota's libraries by the
Minitex Library Information Network; the remainder were purchased by
the CLIC consortium. Most of these books, like the print books
in our consortium's library collections, will be shared among the CLIC
libraries. The CLIC libraries will continue to purchase books
to add to this collection.
Using
netLibrary
Creating
an Account | Logging in
In order to check out a book, you will first need to
Create
a Free Account. If you are accessing netLibrary from off-campus
you will first need to login to Hamline's proxy server.
Search
Tips
You can search by Keyword,
Title, Author, or Full Text from
the main
search screen. netLibrary has created a useful guide to searching
their site: Search
Tips
"View this eBook"
You can browse the table of contents and text of the
book for 15 minutes without logging in to netLibrary. Once the
15 minutes is up, it will be "released" for possible access by another
patron. When you have finished looking at the book, click close
e-book.
Checking
out a Book
Only one person at a time can actually have access to the full text
of a book. You will need to "check out" the book, just as you
would a "real" book. The check out period is 24 hours. To
check out a book, simply click on check out
Reading
Online: When you
first "open" the e-book, the default display shows the text of the book
in the left frame and the table of contents in the right. Your
command and viewing options are at the top of the screen. You
can continue to view the book in the default display or change it to
display just the table of contents or the text of the book. From
the text frame, you can click on next page to continue
to read, or you can jump to a specific page. From the toolbar
at the top, you can search the full text of the book. When you
are done reading the book, click close from the menu at
the top.
Printing
and Downloading
You may print out selections of e-books, just as you
can photocopy parts of "real" books. However, in order to promote fair
use (as defined by copyright laws), there are limits to how much of
a book can be printed, downloaded, or copied: you'll need to do so one
page at a time. The netLibrary program can detect any excessive
copying; you will receive a warning and may be denied access to the
database if you abuse this privilege.
Handy
Features: netLibrary
Notes & requesting notification
The Notes
feature lets you annotate any page of an eBook, save your notes for
future reference, or print your notes as a text file. The requesting
notification feature is helpful if the ebook you want is currently
checked out. It will notify you via email once the item is available
for check out.
