Jelang tenggat sweeping, ketegangan meningkat di NTT

Laporan:"eko@satunet.com" Eko Warijadi
satunet.com - Beberapa jam menjelang tenggat bagi eks-milisi
untuk menyerahkan senjatanya, ketegangan meningkat di
kawasan Timor Barat, NTT. Warga setempat dikabarkan tidak
berani keluar rumah. Rumah-rumah dan toko-toko cenderung
menutup pintunya. Dikatakan Dandim Belu Letkol Joko
Subandrio, pihaknya siap menangkap para eks-milisi dan para
pengungsi yang enggan menyerahkan senjatanya, terhitung per
24:00 Rabu (27/9). Bila perlu, tentara akan menggunakan upaya
paksa. "Kami akan melakukan semua itu, sesuai dengan
prosedur yang digariskan pemerintah," ujar Joko seperti dikutip
CNN.
diminta oleh Resolusi DK PBB No. 1319/2000. Menhan Mahfud
menyerahkan sejumlah senjatanya. [tna].

Berita Luar Negeri:

THE AUSTRALIAN, Thursday 28 September 2000: 28
>From AFP and AP

INDONESIAN President Abdurrahman Wahid said yesterday
his planned meeting with Prime Minister John Howard and
East Timorese leader Xanana Gusmao will take place early
in November.

"In early November, I will hold a tripartite meeting with Prime
Minister Howard and Xanana (Gusmao) in Kupang," Mr Wahid
was quoted by the Antara news agency as saying in Caracas,
Venezuela. Mr Wahid, who is in Caracas for the OPEC
summit, has said the meeting in the West Timor capital would
discuss problems that have arisen since East Timor came
under UN administration in October last year. Meanwhile,
reports from the West Timor town of Atambua yesterday said
that hundreds of pro-Jakarta militia had vowed to resist any
crackdown by the Indonesian military. The government has
promised to use force if necessary to disarm the militias,
which murdered three UN aid workers on September 6, unless
they hand in their weapons by tomorrow. A police officer in the
border town of Atambua said negotiations with militia leaders
had broken down. Many of the paramilitaries have taken their
arms and fled to their stronghold in the town of Betun, about
50km south of Atambua, he said. Some 130,000 East
Timorese refugees and militia are estimated to be still holed
up in refugee camps in West Timor, which the Government is
vowing to close down soon.

Letter to Editor STM:

[1]. Dear Editor STM,

I have followed many of your <ylh@warigal.uqg.uq.edu.au>
comments and your current publication (SUARA TIMOR
MILITAN') at apakabar@saltmine.radix.net and I was
surprised that there is actually still some Indonesians
studying abroad who still has a very stong sense of
nationalism and does not sell out his/her country just to
win a scholarship. Or others like Liem Soe Liong of Tapol or
George J. Aditjondro or Paul H. Salim who happen to hate
Indonesia just because of their own personal matters and
have to attemp to spread lies and hatred troughout the world
to discredit and destroy Indonesia and risk the lives of
innocent farmers and million of children who do not know
anything about politics.

I salute your efforts, keep on writing SUARA TIMOR MILITAN.

All the best for You [BDA].

Editor STM comments:
---------------------------------
Thanks a lot for your private comments on my efforts,
and remember that Editor STM unlike them, because
his mission is not to "CARI POPULARITAS HANYA
UNTUK SESAAT", but "If a man hasn't discovered
something that he will die for, he isn't fit to live"
(Marthin Luther King, Jr., 1929-1968). Without doubt,
he has established "SUARA TIMOR MILITAN" on
24 September 2000 through internet, and he will
bring it back to his beloved country as a special
present to the neglected people of East Timor, who
now temporarily living in the refuge camps in
West Timor and struggle to come back to their
home land in East Timor due to the domination of
The "UNPANZUS" ('The United Nation, Portugal,
Australia, New Zealand and The United States of
America').

[2]. Dear Editor STM,

Parhaps I am sticking my neck in the proverbial noose here but
I happen to think you have raised some very pertanent
questions recently. While I am uncertain of how I feel about the
conflict..and certainly more than a bit appalled by the recent
killing of UN personell..I find your questions worthwhile and
legitimate.

Why is it that Australia is so ready to divide the gas reserves in
a country that has yet to form a government and is being held in
total impoverishment by denial of food, equal jobs, equal wages,
water, sanitation, housing and a say in the government (except
that which UNTAET intends to impose) of their country while
UNTAET and NGO organzations live like kings?

Of the monies donated by all the super and sub-super power
nations how much ARE the salaries of the UNTAET and NGO
et al organizations? $100.00 per day to splurge and live on in
addition to HUGE annual contracts does seem quite unfair and
hypocritical. Perhaps the HUMANITARIAN mask they hide
behind is purely for self gain motives! Who accouns for these
astronomical salaries and expendatures and just how much
actually does reach the hands of the East Timorese? I mean
come on...the cars alone account few hundreds of thousands
of dollars.

A look at television broadcasts shows that at least Dili appear
to be just like any of the Australian "party and play" towns of
Adelaide, Sydney or Darwin. It is a town of Hotels and Night
clubs where the UNTAET and NGO's go to play after 5:00 pm.
Just exactly whom is profitering from the meats and wines they
so throughly enjoy. Do you raise cattle and have wineries in
East or West Timor??

If prostitution is non existant ...how come the only Timorese
seen in pictures of the Hotels are YOUNG women and just how
did 10% of the CIVPOL instructors and cadets faile to pass
their VDRL tests for Syphillis? (WHO report last month) It
appears that they may have kept their pistols holstered but
could not keep their "guns" in their pants so to speak. One can
only wonder how many other sexually infectous diseases are
running rampant and what the numbers are of the other
ORGANIZATIONS that have failed these VDRL syphillis tests.
Also, what happens when they return to their own homelands?
Does WHO report them so that they may be treated? Or do
they just leave it to the infected individuals discression whether
to confess and seek treatment??

If the refugee camps are so "unpleasant" in West Timor then
why, if the refugees outnumber the Militia, don't they simply slip
back to East Timor in the dead of night or revolt?. Better yet,
why does the West Timor government not just simply flood
East Timor with refugees and let the UN deal with them? If a
"line" is to be cut across the middle of Timorese as suggested
the 21% should be able to carve out a nitch for themselves in
short order. Then the returning refugees could reclaim their land,
rent at exorbatant prices to UNTAET and the UN and then later
sell to the developers, have condos on the beach and say 100
years from now.."gee, I am a little bit of Indonesian... my great
granda was a warrior..I think"...in Engish,.......Portugese, Tetum
and Bahasa Indonesia all but a forgotten few!!!

Well thanks for listening to an outside observer [R].
