Thank you, Basilio, for this info which is obviously more than about
diving. I'm not a water sports person, but I wonder -- won't Indonesia's
many other well-known sea sports sites be very stiff competition? And why
put tourists on such an isolated place? Doesn't that decrease the amount
of money they might otherwise spend in East Timor? What is the rest
of the tour package?

> GENERAL INFORMATION ABOUT ATAURO ISLAND
>
> Atauro Island is a part of the district of Dili, East Timor Province. It
> used to be a prison island for East Timorese during Portuguese Regime for
> more than four centuries. Now, howover, Domingos de Sousa, the regent of
> Dili, wants to turn this island into a "Heaven' for Tourism.
At least among the Ozzies (me, non-Ozzie), most visitors will know Atauro
was also a 'prison island' in the present Indonesian period. Isn't it
better to say so? I understand some prisoner families chose to remain on
the island and live there. Maybe some 'political tourists' will start
looking for them and ask a lot of questions? Or will everyone visiting
have a 'minder?'

Just 'recently' opened for general tourism. Excuse this maybe naive
question, but was a surat jalan needed to visit Atauro until 'recently?'
If yes, why?

It sounds like a pleasant place, and the prices are right. But I'm sure
prospective visitors and interested observers would like to know who owns
the business/es involved? And how will East Timorese benefit from any
profits? Are East Timorese involved as the key entrepreneurs? How many
East Timorese are/will be employed in this project? Are they Atauro
people, ex-prisoners, non-East Timorese migrants?
Understand, I am not hostile to the project. I am just trying to ask the
same questions online about the project I would ask if I stayed a few days
there. They're 'natural' questions for which you should have ready and
honest answers.
Salam
John
