GENERAL INFORMATION ABOUT ATAURO ISLAND

Atauro Island is a part of the district of Dili, East Timor Province. It
used to be a prison island for East Timorese during Portuguese Regime for
more than four centuries. Now, howover, Domingos de Sousa, the regent of
Dili, wants to turn this island into a "Heaven' for Tourism.

Atauro Island and Dili have just recentrly being open for general tourism,
as a way of improving the life style of all people who live in the area and
boost economic growth in this stage where the Indonesian nation is facing
the most threatening life due to the economic and monetary crysis.

"If Pante Makassar is known as the first point of disembarkation of the
first portuguese discoverers of Timor island, Atauro is known as the last
point of embarkation of the last Portuguese colonist" says the Regent of Dili.

One can reach Atauro island in just in 45 minutes by Speed Boat from Dili
harbour or 4 hours by Traditional Boat from Hera Harbour.

"Atauro is a beatiful, large and long island next to the Wetar trench. The
people are simple, friendly and live mostly of growing corn and fishing. The
island is located just off the cost of Dili. It rises mysteriously from the
sea. Its mountain peaks are hidden amongst the clouds, it cliffs plummeting
into the sea, not heavily populated although about 7000 people live on the
island". Says Sasha Muller of Coral Divers, Darwin, Northern Terrirory,
Australia.

Atauro has shallow sand spit to the nort of the island, which has excellent
snorkeling. Around the corner the island drops off and one can see the
famous island of Alor and Lira. Large schools of Snapper, Sharks, Mackerel,
the list goes on and on. The existing deep water around the island bring
schools of Dolphings, Whales and marlin to the sea.

"We spotted everything from Clown Fish to Sand Eels, Moray Eels to huge
Sharks and the best part-no people remote". Again, says Sasha.

"The Southern end of the island is the most interesting site. The cliffs and
their vertical drops into extremely deep water produce spectacular walls
with corals and giant sponges, reef-tip sharks and myriad of tropical fish.

The diving in this area is heart-stopping to say the least and one should
not be surprised to meet with 4 meters long weasel Shark". Said Rury of
Coral Divers who joinned the first Coural Divers tour to East Timor in April
5-10, 1998.

Now more words can explain the beauty of Atauro Island, but one thing for
sure". You will not be disappointed. You will never know if you have never
ever seen it. W E L L C O M E to A T A U R O I S L A N D.
