Studying a modern language and its culture opens your eyes and your intellect.
Hamline offers Chinese, French, German and Spanish as vehicles to a better understanding of the world we live in. The Modern Languages department values the historic past, yet is dynamic and forward-looking, offering majors in both traditional and innovative areas of study.
Students in the Modern Languages department enhance their education in many ways: they study abroad, engage in collaborative research with their professors, write honors projects, present at the National Council on Undergraduate Research (NCUR) and participate in community service, internships and independent study. Many are double majors in complementary fields such as anthropology, history, or political science.
Our graduates go into teaching, law, medicine, government, social service, and the business world.
We are very proud of our graduates, who often return to tell us of their accomplishments, travels, and use of the language.
There are four language options within the Department of Modern Languages:
Language Placement Exam
Language House Application
