Men's BB has Solid Effort in Season Opening Win Over SJU

It was the sort of game HU men's BB coach Nelson Whitmore probably wishes he could bottle for the future. The Pipers started fast against St. John's and never let up en route to a 75-59 victory in the conference opener for both teams.

Hamline improved to 3-1 overall as Tyler Pannell (pictured) and Dior Ford fired in 16 points apiece. The Pipers vaulted to an 8-0 lead in the first two minutes of play and never looked back. They increased the first half margin to as many as 12 before settling for a 37-29 intermission edge.

In the second half, they put the game away, leading by 13 with 15 minutes to play. The difference was as many as 22 points before the Johnnies had a late rush.

It was Hamline's best defensive effort of the season as SJU shot just 46 per cent. In addition, HU held a 32-22 edge in rebounds. First time starter Austin Johnson (filling in for the injured Wes Pinera) led a balanced attack with six.

Knowing his team has four games in eight days, Whitmore used his bench as a dozen players saw action. All of them scored at least two points. HU hosts St. Thomas Saturday at 3:00 p.m.
