Zurn, Rubbelke Get Goals In Loss At St. Mary's

Nick Widing

The Piper men's hockey team fell into a big hole early in Winona Friday and couldn't make up ground fast enough. Hamline gave up five goals in the first 11:44 of play in a 9-2 loss at St. Mary's in the MIAC opener for both teams. The Pipers slipped to 0-4-1 overall on the season and will look for their first win of the year in the rematch Saturday in Vadnais Heights at 7:15 p.m.

HU was outshot 14-2 in the first period (and 31-21 for the game) as the Cardinals improved to 3-2 on the season.

Chris Hoffman (pictured) and Joe Rubbelke had a goal and an assist each in the second period as the Pipers cut the margin to 6-2. But SMU poured in three more goals in the final frame to put the game out of reach.

A reminder that the Saturday game will be played at the Bremer rink instead of the usual Tousley rink at the Vadnais Heights complex. The Bremer rink is the one on the east side of the building.
