Nick Widing

Nick Widing (pictured) showed he still has the scoring touch. Unfortunately, his teammates touched too many visitors' shirts along the way. Widing netted a pair of goals but the Pipers allowed three power play goals (two in the second period) in a 5-4 loss to Wis-Eau Claie Friday night at Vadnais Heights Sports Complex.

Joe Rubbelke added three assists but Hamline fell to 0-2-1 on the season while the Blugolds improved to 3-0-0.

Widing got things going in the right direction, finishing off a three-way play 6:25 into the game. WEC tied matters by the end of the period and took a lead early in the second period only to see HU score twice just 40 seconds apart. Kevin Novakovich tied the game, tipping in a Rubbelke shot on a power play at 6:16. Tyler Johnson then blasted one home at 6:56 to give HU their second lead of the night.

It lasted ten minutes until the Pipers got into big penalty trouble. Twice they went two players ... and the Blugolds connected both times to take the lead at 4-3 after two.

WEC got another one in the first minute of the third period. it proved to be critical when Widing connected on his second of the night on a power play at 12:02.

Matt Hemingway, who recorded 22 saves in goal, was pulled for a sixth attacker in the final minute. Hamline controlled the play but could not get the equalizer.

The Pipers will face another Badger state invader -- Wis-River Falls -- Saturday, November 3 at their former home rink, Drake Arena. Game time is 7:00 p.m.
